Long story, call me and I can explain.

As you know it has been the winter convention for the last two years. unfortunately things took a bit of a turn and now steve (rockaholics) is having the southwest crawlfest and utah4x4club and canyon country will be heading up different avenues this winter.

Gotcha, I was confused as to what the deal was with the two different events... that makes sense. Steve C. was/is fundamental planning the Winter Conventions for the past few years, I realize he had a bunch of help from guys like you. Best of wishes to both event... hoping I can make it down to at least one of them myself!

And then some. If the weather permits there will be a trail that is going on that has been in development the last year. It is called The Squezze Very fun trail up a narrow wash. I just did it around thanksgiving and love it. It is very likely that there will be some body damage on this trail to every rig.
I will be attending this event. Hope to meet some of you there.

I'm sure one of the organizers will chime in here, but I think they use 2 different rating scales. The Winter on the Rocks uses a 1 - 5 trail rating scale and the Southwest Crawlfest is using a 1 - 10 (?) scale. The trails are the same.

You are right about the rating systems, we are talking about the number of Trails available. WOTR has a larger selection, no big deal, just an observation

BonZuki
12-18-2009, 08:20 AM
Youre right we will be adjusting this soon but it shouldnt affect anyone .But if it does i will help them get to the right trail for there rig. Thanks for pointing this out as i did talk to Seth our webmaster about that this morning. He thought it would be better to go to the new rating system but it is still a little hard to get used to.

SAMI
12-18-2009, 08:48 AM
I don't believe that there are two different scales being used. Judging by the description they sound correct in relation with eachother.

My point is that there is a 'trail difficulty' gap between the 3, and the 7 rated trails..

The Honeymoon trail is graded roads for stock rigs, and the next trail up is Sliplock Gulch; which requires F&R lockers, maximum lift, large tires, and winch recommended. Pretty big gap in required equipment.

BonZuki
12-18-2009, 08:52 AM
We are running 10 trails each day Hence the meaning 20 trails over 2 Days .We have 2 extra trails for overflow One Scenic and One Buggy as we have had an overwhelming response of registrants which was expected .We are looking to have around 250+ registrations and we need to have the Extra trails to accommodate the amount of rigs we will be having. We have a lot of things happening and we are excited to have everyone join Us Thanks Steve!

BonZuki
12-18-2009, 09:18 AM
These trails are rated based on the average rig and Driver . We all know that there are drivers and rigs that can go through harder trails than the ratings because of driving technique type of rig etc . Most drivers know what trails they are capable of and for those who need assistance I will be glad to assist them in their trail choice or if you have suggestions just call me at 435-215-4516 . An Example The Fault line has been done fully open by several rigs but it comes back to style of driving and rig Tires etc. After looking at them again there is really not much i can do to change things!

Milt 's Mile
Rated: 6
Roads are difficult with considerable erosion damage repaired just enough to be passable. Water in excess of 12″ is possible with mud conditions. Steps not exceeding 24″. Tall tires (33″ plus) with traction added devices (lockers, limited slips) are recommended. A winch would be a plus. Enhanced suspension travel and ground clearance are helpful. Excellent driving skills are recommended. This trail is in a fee area and flags are required. More about this trail

Fault Line

Rated: 7
Trail consists of rock, sand and considerable slickrock with many steps exceeding 24″. Steep inclines and declines are prevalent. Enhanced off road equipment is required including locking devices (front & rear), tall tires, maximum vehicle ground clearance, and tow hooks. A winch is desirable. Excellent driving skills are required. Vehicle mechanical or body damage is likely. Roll over possibilities exist. More about this trail

Jason, FWIW We took a stockish Cherrokee (no lockers) on sliplock (only didnt do the big waterfall) and on the west rim, He did everything on west rim except the "optional" bigger stuff. There is plenty of things for you to run. Go look at the trip report Olly did a couple weeks back. That was mostly west rim.

I'm hoping to come to this, but won't know until first of the year.

I'll have to take someone's advice on difficulty, as I don't have any point of reference for the 'new' trail ratings and aside from that, they are entirely subjective anyway. Probably something around Pritchett in difficulty would be ok for my byu co-ed-esque ZJ (big, heavy, wide, ugly). Don't care about bumps and scrapes, but would prefer not to destroy any body panels.

J,
A rear locker would be nice but not necessary, I completed the entire trail with only a few bypasses with the near bone stock original '84. Complete with 6'x8' bed and 75% worn 30"x9.50" MTR's and an Aussie in the rear.

Of course I didn't have quite the plastic the X does...

4Chin also did the trail with no damage in a stock 2nd Gen 4Runner with a lockright and 32" AT's

Sorry I missed your earlier question cody,

Sliplock is a very short "trail" it only has 1 real obstacle in it, Look at that trip report olly did, we took that white cherrokee up the entire trail except for the 1 big waterfall (its also in those pics) I honestly think you would enjoy westrim/maze way more than sliplock. They are longer trails and have tons of optional stuff to play on.

FWIW I live down here and run these trails all the time and if your rig is locked F&R with 35's+ and any sort of driving skill then Maze or the Warner Valley trails will be the most fun for you. The "Buggy Trail" is just a g*d d**m boulder fiesta if you are into that kind of offroading. Not necessarily that hard, but will definitely show any weak spots on a rig.

Steve, I sold the jungle gym (nissan) but I have another ride I am looking at buying. I am looking forward to your event.

It's not the question if I can do the trail but will I be able to exit the trail without major body damage. I'm pretty protective of my body!!! I was able to run Golden Spike in Moab for comparison.

I would like to enjoy the trail as well as have some challenges rather than fear smashing up my rig and figuring how to drive it back to UT county.

Anyone can answer my question too on the difficulty and my ability to do it with my truck style overhang body.

Stephen,
I was going to register but some medical stuff has come up and I don't want to take a space I may not be able to fill. Are drop ins going to be able to fill gaps in trails? I think I'll fit just about anywhere, well built TJ on 35" creepy crawlers ARBx2 etc, not too worried about more bent panels.

Is Stephen Wade really giving $35000 toward the purchase of vehicle and $15,000 in upgrades for it? Is this just for this event or is it in combination of something else also. Either way that is Cool and if it is for this event then the chances would be really good at winning. Good luck all and have fun. It is great are to get out and wheel with lots of great trails.

That's great the odds are better when you have 150 tickets and the thing to remember about our Event is that it is a fund raiser. At this Event we do not have a registration fee We raise most of our funds from raffle ticket sales .We have made every effort to beef up the raffle so that there are a lot of winners and that most winners will come away with $500 or more in raffle prizes. So please plan for this in your budgets and Help our land use causes the best you can and hopefully you will have one of the winning tickets .The main thing you need to do is have a great time .Thanks for all of your support Steve !:greg:

I am sending an update email with a link to the trail assignment pdf tomorrow. We have made some adjustment to accommodate the growth of the event. We have added a second buggy trail, another medium difficulty trail the Trail leader is calling East Rim and another difficult trail comparable to The Maze. We have worked hard to keep everyone in groups by clubs and on the trails they have requested. We also need to keep group sizes reasonable. And in doing this we will be moving some rigs to alternate trails that have the same difficulty rating. The earlier you registered the better the odds are that you will be on your first choice.

Of all the times I have wheeled in theGeorge I have never been disappointed with the trail. All the trails are a lot of fun. Many have side obstacles every 30 ft. And none are far from open areas that you can play around on.

We would prefer everyone line up at the Fairgrounds for the fact that it is best to keep each group together. You have to go to the Fairgrounds to register and The trail leaders have a responsibility to hand out Waiver forms to each driver in there group and it would be difficult to do this if we are not uniform in our line-ups .We are also having the Buggy trails line up as well at the fairgrounds it helps keep things organized and everyone in one place .We are looking at having a Helicopter shooting Video and pics from the Sky at the Fairgrounds and out on the trails so it will also help with this as well. I hope everyone understands Thanks Steve!

What Park Ranger? Sand Hollow or BLM?
If all trails are going in through the state park then that is understandable. I was not aware that we needed them to access it through the Washington dam staging area. It seem rash to make everyone have a flag. Have you checked with the BLM ranger that is over that area. Once you are off of the sand dunes the Sand Hollow rangers do not patrol the slip lock, johns trail, west rim, Maze, Warner valley or the Honeymoon trail. Just some thoughts. Seem ridiculous to require flags especially on the Warner Valley and Honeymoon. Just some thoughts.

The State Park Rangers have full jurisdiction all the way to the staging area Del and I have both been in Contact with the Blm and the State Park and the BLM have made an agreement to have the Park Rangers patrol the area from the sand dunes all the way to the staging area it sucks but it is a fact that they have already been giving tickets .So please have a flag we dont want to give them an excuse to give us any tickets Thanks Steve!

Checked BLM info about flags earlier. They say flags need to be 8' from the ground, so putting a flag on your CB antenna should be fine if it's tall enough.

Cool! Then I can put the flag on the side of my rollcage. :p

same here. my wife and I will make this an annual tradition. Thank you Steve and everyone else who made this happen, we had a blast!

On a side note, I had the winning scratch card for the car, but I scratched the wrong 5 squares. Since my ticket wasn't a winner, I scratched them all off, only to find 5 similar squares. Luck wasn't on my side that day. I just wanted everyone to know there actually was a winning ticket, and you can blame me for picking the wrong 5 squares.

Thanks again!

I did the same and had five winning pictures as well on all three of the cards I had. I think the lottery is based on the probability of anyone scratching the right five. There's amazing odds against picking five in a row correctly. (still fun, though--would have been cool to see someone win the Jeep)

good, that makes me feel better knowing I wasn't the only one who was unlucky. I was going to calculate the probability, but I forgot how to do that. It's been a while since I took math.

odds to win jeep was 1 in 6,375,600. less that winning the powerball lottery.

But every card was a potential winner and from what i have heard most people verified this was fact .But i agree that next year will be different .:)

This is a quote from the Promotion Company On the scratch cards the odds for getting five of 25 are 52,130 to 1, and getting 6 of 25 are 593,775 to 1.
This was an added bonus to our raffle which was the main event and we thought it would be exciting if someone would win but again the raffle was over $25,000 dollars which in itself was a fun time Thanks Steve!

We thought it would be a great addition to the large raffle we already had put together but we are looking into other things next year to do instead maybe a real buggy or jeep to be raffled off:greg:!!!
