Helicopters/drones for filming

I'm loving this Mavic. I get great footage, have amazing control, and I love the different modes I can fly in. It's so much easier to get the shots I want vs using a Gopro strapped to my Iris+ The in-controller control over every aspect of the camera is awesome. I even live streamed to Facebook from the Mavic yesterday. I need to gather up some of this footage and make a story out of it to make it interesting for other people to watch. I always get up higher than I really need to be. I can always crop the video in post and shooting in 4k I don't lose detail when I do it.

You're lucky there was no damage! Some things to keep in mind when flying.... your perspective and distance from the Mavic with other objects around isn't always what it seems. Don't rely on the camera OR sensors for locating obstacles, especially when you're new to this. You have to calculate the risk versus reward for certain shots and decide if the high chance of crashing is worth it.

I would recommend you stay far away from trees, powerlines, houses, etc, etc, etc. Get up high over everything for your first couple weeks of flying, where you don't risk hitting anything. Get used to the controls first and then bring it down low and work on operating in tighter flying spaces.

Good advice. When I crashed it, I was tracking a subject (a biker at the dirt jumps). In order to get the shot I had to get pretty close to the trees. Unfortunately I got a little too close. By the time I realized how close I was, I applied the brakes. It almost stopped short of the trees, but it barely clipped them. But I got the shot, and it was a good one.

In general, I tend to film people more than landscapes with my drone, so that usually means flying at a lower altitude. A wider angle lens would really help me frame my subject in small spaces. I guess shooting with GoPros for so long has ruined me in regards to the space required to shoot something.

I'm learning that even though I I]can[/I] fly the mavic in really tight spaces, framing my subject typically requires a lot more room than I initially thought. If I were doing landscapes or larger-than-life shots of a truck driving down a dirt road, then I have plenty of room. At skateparks, mtb trails, hiking spots, etc. I'm learning where it's realistic to film and where it isn't. The more I use this, the more I learn about its limitations (and mine) and how best to work with them. That being said, this is an incredible tool and it's been a ton of fun to get some new perspectives and shots with it. Once a Mavic 2 comes out (or whatever it'll be) with side, back, and upwards obstacle avoidance, I'll be all over it. I obviously get too focused on the shot that I forget my situational awareness. I'm starting to be more situationally aware the more I use it.

I was playing with active track last night. It worked pretty well on humans, but it kept losing the dog (no doubt his franting running around changing pace made it tough). I also played around with cinema mode. I like cinema mode, but it requires a LOT more distance to stop moving. I'm afraid cinema mode will get me in trouble one day, as it won't brake as fast as I want it to. Lots to learn, but it's surprisingly simple to use out of the box.

I now have 3 batteries, and the FS Labs 3-battery charger is great. It'll charge all 3 of my batteries at once.

I think a lot of you guys have seen this, but here's my latest... I've had some great compliments and shares, saying it looked 'professional'.... makes me feel good about the work I'm doing! I'm always trying to improve, but thought that this area had SO MUCH POTENTIAL when it came to aerial filming. BTW, the last part over Monument Valley... I was flying directly over the road, so I should be perfectly legal. ;)

So a friend mentioned that he wished the above video were longer, so I made a compilation of the many 4x4 aerial vids I've taken since I got started and this is the result....

Great stuff Greg! 3:10 was my favorite shot

Thank you, Steve! It's amazing to me seeing the clarity difference in the footage from the old Phantom that filmed in 2.7k to the Mavic filming in 4k pixels. Also, the Phantom's moves weren't as smooth, so the footage from the Mavic looks much more professional. It blows me away how good video from the Mavic looks, it's an amazing piece of equipment.

You should sell those shots to jeep, also a great song from a pretty good film

I would love to sell this footage, just have to find the right buyer! I think I'd have to find a different song though, since this is copyrighted. I do LOVE the song, along with the album and movie! ;)

The new sparklooks intriguing. I need to read up on the specs a bit more. I'm still glad I have my mavic with the folding wings.

It looks like a fun little thing. I've been following the release today. Doesn't shoot 4k, but it's a drone for fun and things like that so it doesn't need 4k. I think it fits well in DJI's group of drones.

It's a cute little thing...no use for it since I already have the Mavic and the Inspire 2 but they'll sell a ton of em! The Mavic is perfect for adventure sports type stuff...that little Spark is going to be too slow I'm betting.

I'd love to hear more about people's settings and tips and tricks and ideas for great shots.

I'm at a farm today and I'm finding the active track pretty awesome. It'll lock onto cows, windmills, all sorts of things.

I need to watch more good drone footage to start thinking of different ways to frame my shots and get reveals.

Currently, my gimbal settings are too jerky. I need to go in and tweak that in the settings.

What do you guys program your c buttons to do?

I haven't programmed my C button for anything yet. Active track is great for when I'm walking or SUPing, low altitude shots, but not so great for higher altitude when filming the Jeep on a dirt road. I use Follow Me for that. I just downloaded the new firmware yesterday that is supposed to improve some gimbal settings. I hop to fly after work so I'll see what those are about. I use the point of interest setting quite a bit, and cinematic mode is great for smoothing out my turns and things. I just put a filter on the lens and it is awesome. I should have ordered filters at first.

I am looking for a smaller drone that will follow me, controlled by my phone possibly, that has 20 min flight time. THere are some out there that are supposed to follow your phone even if its in your pocket. Where I am wanting this for is when I am riding I can just set it to follow my phone and I dont have to worry about it. Anyone know of a descent one? The Mavik is great but, realistically, you have to have the controller out. I want to be able to get on my motorcycle and have it follow me on trails like Marys Trail, Dead Cow, etc. without touching the controller.

I'm wanting the same thing Russ. Simplicity beats a million features for me. 99% of my photos are taken with my phone because it's simple, but my mirrorless is way more capable and takes way better features. They say the best camera is the one you have with you. I would love one that was small, wide angle, and simple to follow.

I like my mavic a lot, but it's still tricky to film my activities while I'm the subject too. My wife can't fly the drone, so if I want to be in it, it either has to be wide open, or just hovering there like a big tripod. There are features I'm not uaing, so maybe I'm overlooking something.

The mavic can be flown without the controller, and it follows a subject on the screen, not the phone. I need to experiment with this more.

I finally got my first drone clips edited. Nothing amazing, and there are definitely some lessons learned, but it has really brought a new element to my videos. I'm loving it.

I think the drone footage meshes pretty well! My best advice for people that buy Mavics is to learn all of the active track modes...they are voodoo magic at its finest for that "third cameraman" you are looking for. Once you figure out the active-track and how to apply it to your videos, you're going to lose your mind!

Thanks for the tip, I'm still learning those modes. I totally agree, I need to learn them insidr and out. I get why dji used such a zoomed in lens (to avoid getting props in the shot) but it really requires a lot more room to fly. Just an adjustment for me.

I came dangerously close to hitting trees and powerlines in the first pump track video since I had to be so far away to see the bikers. Definitely a lot to learn.

How does active track differ from follow me?
