Your posts on this project make me want to get my 48 going again. I definitely WON'T be purchasing a Kaiser Willys brake set up.

You should get it going again! @Magerdgr was talking about making some kind of Vintage Iron run, 4x4's that were 50+ years old. It would be fun to have a group and go up AF Canyon or somewhere else.

I'd be down for that. Been wanting to have a go at AF Canyon for a while, but not a lot of adventurous flattie guys near me.

The hardest part about AFC is finding a time when it's not packed with thousands of other people. :( But if we could do that, it sure would be fun to run up to Mineral Basin!

Most weekdays midday is the best way to avoid any crowds. Some days you may only see 1-2 other vehicles passed Graveyard Flats turn-off.

Have you done any of the steering parts besides the tie rods? Bell crank, sector shaft any of that stuff?

I'm still interested in doing this Greg, I think it'd be killer! I've never run AF canyon, but always wanted to.

On your master, when you bench bled it was fluid coming out of the port for the rear? I'd be inclined to pull the plunger assembly apart and clean it out good, I bet it's got some little blockage in there, maybe a bit of manufacturing debris. Either that or there is a tear in that plunger?

Yep, a mid-week run would be the best to avoid traffic.... but that means getting out of work.

I haven't, still need to drive it and see how much better it is with the new TRE's.

Hopefully we can make a plan this Summer for some kind of Vintage Iron run!

I honestly don't remember if there was fluid coming out of the port for the rear, I thought there was but now I'm 2nd guessing myself. You're probably right, I'm sure it's something small.... just dislike pulling it all apart to diagnose the problem!

Yeah, that's a pain for sure man. I need to go through the brakes on my A1 and rebuild them, it's been about 12 years.

I should do that...

After pulling the brake master cyl off twice and bleeding it yesterday, I finally found my problem! It was totally my fault... all the bad things I said about Kaiser Willys were wrong. My mistake! While I was bench bleeding the master (again) I noticed that the rear port only pressurizes at the first 20% of the stroke.... from there the front brakes take over. I had the adjusted the rod between the clutch pedal and master cyl too 'deep' and the rod was totally bypassing the circuit that activates the rear brakes.:grimacing: (To be fair, the directions don't help much at all when it comes to that adjustable rod and where it should be set.... you have to cut it to length.)

Anyhow.... I was able to bleed the brakes, button up a few minor details, put the fenders back on and take the CJ2a out for a little drive. I went the furthest I've driven yet from home.... everything was going great, until I ran out of gas. :( I filled the tank last Fall and the gauge was reading 1/2 full... but apparently the gas had evaporated and the gas gauge wasn't working. Quick call to my wife and I had 5 gallons on the way.

Once I had gas, I was able to take a QUICK drive offroad on the rocks and in the dirt! It was so much fun... I had a blast. Can't wait to do it again!

I need to fix up a few things and then on to the LockRite install!

Seriously.... it was so much fun to drive around yesterday! It wasn't terribly warm outside though, hopefully soon we'll have another warm day and I can get out even further. I need to test out how reliable it is for cruising around town, I would really like to take it outside of town and on to some dirt roads near by and see how reliable it is at that point!

I can imagine! There's nothing so frustrating as wanting to use your jeep and not being able to, but not being able to figure out why. Even more so when you know it's something simple you're missing but can't put your finger on it.
