I run an app called Osmand on an android tablet with a Garmin GPS puck. I tried Gaia and BCN, and never was a big fan of either. In numerous cases I would grab what I thought was enough tiles for a trip, and midway through find myself in an area I hadn't downloaded.

Osmand has a high level of trail and road detail, and you download everything by state. This is a great "set it and forget it" approach, which is what I need after a busy work week. The maps in there already for most of the western states. All I have to do for detail trip planning is drop a few tracks in for trails, POI's, waypoints, whatever. It also does routable driving navigation.

I was about to go back to a Garming until I found this because Gaia and BCN irritated me so many times... Love Osmand.... Just my 2c.

I have been running locus pro on Andriod for hiking, moto and mtb rides and jeeping. So far I really like it. It's cheap, no subscription required and it's way better than BCN in my opinion. Lots of Adv moto guys using it.

I had a quick look, that's not bad. It won't replace BCN for me, I'm too attached to the Accuterra maps and digital topos, but it'll be a good backup for those times I wander out of my DL area.

I'm a low tech guy, but I thought I'd put it out there that the company ONX which is awesome in the hunting tracking space just launched ONX Offroad, which is an app that shows all open routes in all 50 states. Moto, SXS, Jeep, ect. It is only $30 a year and you can download maps for offline use. The best part is it's FREE to existing ONX customers for a limited time. I renewed my hunting app today and they threw it in. I haven't used it yet, but again, it might be useful for some of you.
