No more state safety inspection in utah

I heard through the grapevine that salvage title vehicles will still need a safety inspection - I'm sure the initial inspection after rebuilding is staying as a requirement, but will they need an annual safety inspection once they're "rebuilt/restored" titles?

I had a guy come in yesterday for a emissions test. As I was taking his info he asked if we could take a minute and check the brakes. He said I check my lights. I check my tires. I know that stuff is fine. But while it is in the shop can you check my brakes. I think you will see two things happen. 1st is that people that have never cared will not change. They will continue to drive their clapped out pile of shit. 2nd people that care will continue to care and will want to know of issues with their car.
For lots of us on this forum we are weird!! Think about the cars you have. I bet without looking you have a pretty good idea the next time it needs a oil change. You know what kind of shape the tires are in cause your are already doing your research on what the next tire is your going to buy. What are your brake measurements? Most of us know this stuff off the top of our heads on every car that we drive. We are not normal!! For the majority of people as long as the car goes vroom vroom that's all they need to know. I'm all for less government control. Sadly society in general is dumb and cant... No CHOOSE to not take care of themselves.

Interesting article Brian linked to above. This quote stands out to me as representative:
"The boy told detectives the speedometer had not worked for as long as the family had owned the vehicle, which was about five years"

I don't think the inspection law changing will change much of anything. How good of an inspection do you think you are going to get for the state mandated $17 minus all the costs the state imposes on those stations? I've been amused over the years to see what inspection stations have written down as the amount of brake pad left and how often it is a number that is nowhere close to reality, meaning that I know they didn't look at the shoes/pads, let alone measure them.

This has been my experience as well. In one instance, I took my (new to me) motorcycle in for it's first inspection and was told that the rear brakes were only going to last for 1 more riding season. I ordered a new set of shoes, and when I went to install them I found that the pad thickness on the existing shoes were indistinguishable from the new set in the box. LOL

From what I've observed, a safety / IM inspection actually consisted of checking all lights and the horn, and running the OBD2 scan. I don't think a thorough check was truly being accomplished.

On the flip side, one thing I have noticed in the last month or two have been a few cars with window tint that is obviously too dark to be legal.

in the case of my mother or mother-in-law, who are both single women and are clueless as to vehicles, the only time either of them know something is wrong is when they fail a safety. Without annual checks, they may suffer negative affects. It would be nice if their oil shops stepped up and did some sort of inspection each time to help maintain their vehicles.. but that's not going to happen.
I totally understand that each driver should be responsible for regular checks on their vehicle.. but the reality is that it just won't happen.

Boy, did I call it. My mother’s lower ball joint failed today. The A-arm dropped down and punctured through her wheel busting it in multiple places, and locked it up from rolling. Her brake line got ripped off, and she lost brake pressure. The car came to a screeching stop on the side of the road.

She had her emissions test done yesterday. A safety inspection would have caught it, and prevented a TON of damage. A decent shop could have caught it with a courtesy inspection.

That sucks, I'm glad she is alright.

A quick check from her loving son in law would have found it too, and everyone can keep their personal liberty.

Yeah, that too.

I did point out that I strongly believe that we are all responsible for our own vehicles.
I just also knew it would be neglected.
Many shops do a free ‘road trip’ check. It would be pretty simple to have any car checked out. Lesson learned for her, and me.

It makes sense to me that there's going to be growing pains as some folks learn the hard way that nobody else is checking their vehicles for them. I'm sorry for Jeeper that his MIL had to be one of the broken eggs but I'm glad everyone's ok.

Speaking of which, recommend any places for tint? I want a tad darker on my ford, nothing obnoxious... but if it pleases the 'Crown' I'd like to limit the amount of sunrays that enter my vehicle.

If you're willing to go to Tooele

I use Red Rock Tint in St. George. Probably further than you wan to go, but he does great work and his prices are better than I have seen anywhere else. Make a trip to Sand Hollow to justify it.

Absolutely, I didn't mean to be rude at all, I have seen you take care of your family and your stuff. I love your flatbed.

I love Red Rock! I started using them just due to their attachment to the moto scene, but always a good job and as mentioned the best pricing here. Also they always work me in. Call for an appointment, but often I've been taken care of just drop it off in the morning , and usually have a phone call within a couple hours to come get it.
