I know this is a long ways out, but I'm putting together a Whole Enchilada bike ride for Monday October 14. We are planning to be down there Friday the 11-Monday the 14. We plan to ride TWE on Monday and other trails/hiking/whatever the rest of the time. My wife is planning to shuttle us, if the group gets too big we may have to add a vehicle or something. I will be riding with my 9 year old son Maxton so we will not be winning any Strava segments, IE lots of snack breaks. We are undecided on weather or not we will be bringing my 7 year old daughter (camping, definitely not on the ride), it will probably depend on who else (other kids her age) will be there. Not sure where we'll camp yet or much of anything really, just wanting to get the invite out there for calendaring purposes as most people would have to take a vacation day or 2. We'd love to have a good group of RMErs join us. If you've been wanting to ride TWE but aren't sure if you can keep up with your buddies, this is the group to go with! ;) I wouldn't say we're slow, but we do stop a lot. Post up if you're interested! :cool:

Pencil me in. It'd be me and my 13 y/o riding TWE, maybe the wife and 5 y/o camping/riding easier trails/whatever.
This sounds like a good time, pencil me in as well.

Sounds good! In the interest of full disclosure, the eraser on my pencil is missing. :rofl:

I'm in! For some reason I think my wife and the girls won't be coming, but I'll double check

I wasn't figuring on them but if you can convince them to come that would be awesome! :cool::D:cool:

Are you all sure your younger kids are up to it skill wise? It’s not that it’s an extremely difficult ride and they for sure push their bikes through sections but not only is there mostly down hill but depending on where you begging they could have around 1000’ of vertical they have to climb. I am all for you riding it with your kids, I think it’s a great activity but you do have 5-6 months to get them ready for it.

I can't speak for the other kids, but so far this year Maxton (and for the most part Calvin) has ridden Hymasa and Capitan Ahab (2300' of climbing), Mag7 (1400' of climbing), Porcupine rim (the bottom half of TWE - 1400' of climbing) and several times a month we ride locally, usually averaging 1200'-1500' of uphill. I realize it will be a long ride and we will be taking lots of snack breaks but I have done quite a bit of research and we have been working up to this ride for going on 2 years.

With that experience, I would take your boys on it.

I have ridden TWE, 9, maybe 10 times. Here is my take on it. First, I ride Corner Canyon, AF Canyon quite a bit. I put in 57K feet of climbing last year. I can easily ride 10 to 15 miles of corner canyon with 1500ft of climb. I don't really like the WHOLE Enchilada. The climb over burro is taxing and the reward is limited. It's good to do but I would and did start out from Warner lake the first time, then work up to dropping off at Burro pass. If you are taking a shuttle, this might not be an option depending on conditions.

For me, starting at Warner is the best of all worlds. It takes the big climb out at the start and you still get 90% of the fun stuff. I have taken about a dozen guys in their 30's that are decent riders (not kids with endless energy mind you) and they are wiped out by the bottom. You look at all that elevation loss on paper and it seems way easier than it is. Ahab is the equivalent to the top 1/3 of TWE if you start at warner in energy expenditure.

That said it is THE funnest ride I have ever done. Make sure you take a lot of water and spare tubes. I don't think we have ever made it to the bottom without a tire/tube failure. Even running Maxxis DHF's tubeless we've lost side walls. Have fun. I'll be watching this thread and hopefully I'll be able to tag along.

Well, time to bump this up. We are about 7 weeks out, the details are getting a little more detailed. We are considering camping at Ken's Lake (or somewhere in that area) to make it easy for my wife to shuttle. My family will probably go down Friday morning and at the moment are planning to bring my 8yo daughter along (for the camping and weekend activities, she won't be riding TWE). We will likely bring some kayaks for family time on the lake but will also be riding various trails throughout the weekend, culminating in TWE on Monday. We will work out a self shuttle for anyone who comes, and (purely for the kid's benefit of course....:spork:) my wife has graciously agreed to meet us somewhere along the trail with a cooler and a grill for lunch. Nothing like a hot lunch and cold drinks in the middle of a long ride!:cool: We will not be riding race pace and will be taking lots of snack breaks. If you are looking to set some Strava times this isn't the group for you! However, if you are interested in a fun friendly ride and are up for the distance we'd love to have you. As we get closer we'll get the plans even more firmed up. If anyone has any suggestions for camping feel free to speak up. Looking forward to it!!

Less than 2 weeks! Not much has changed from my last post, my family will be going down Friday (Oct 11) morning and we are planning to camp at Ken's Lake. It is first come first serve ($15/night) so hopefully it won't be too full. We will be bringing some kayaks for playing on the lake and plan to ride and hike the weekend away. Monday early we will hit TWE shuttled by my wife. She will be meeting us somewhere around halfway with lunch (bring your own food/drinks to put in the cooler before we start) and a grill in case anyone is interested in warm lunch. I'm super excited! We would love to have anyone join us for TWE, the camping, the hiking, other trails, or whatever. So far I am planning on the following:

Corban
Maxton
Laura*
Kayla*
Losaunne
Jonathan
Jon (@jsudar)
Calvin
Ben (@benjy)
Kami and girls*
Steve (@sixstringsteve)
Tess ?*?
Little Dusty*

@dutchman ??
@Rock Taco ??
@Kevin B. ??
@glockman ??

*= not riding TWE

Post up if you are planning to be down at all. Feel free to call or txt me as well. 801-960-fifty four seventy seven.
