Maybe it is “I just assume anyone that has portals is poor” because building axles with them makes one spend all the monies.
It depends what your other options are. Junkyard axles with welded diffs will obviously always be cheaper but if you’re building fabricated housings with Mega hi-9’s it’s going to be a lot closer in price. Also if you consider that running portals means you can run a D300 instead of an Atlas there’s obviously some savings there.

Right totally makes sense to buy a donor D300, take 2 parts out of it, throw the rest in the garbage, buy a midnight metalworks case for $1400, JB 4:1 for $750, 32 spline outputs for ~$725 and a rebuild kit for $200ish. Or just go buy an Atlas for about the same price. All I was implying is that building a portal rock crawler is expensive no matter which way you look at it. If the stock d300 case was good enough, midnight metalworks wouldn't be offering a case....Really any way you look at it, cars are expensive in any form of a hobby. But by george a hotwheels was the best most expensive $0.99 mistake I ever made as a kid :p

I’m sure there are plenty of cars out there rocking D300’s with stock cases and upgraded outputs. Ryan just upgraded his to the Stak case cause it’s shiny.

The tabs are a disaster since they’re all custom and weird. On top of that we designed them months ago so I have no idea what I had planned at the time. Yay for me!

I got some link mounts on the front axle. I really look forward to getting back to welding more often because while my welds are fine I know they will just get better. Welding the misalignments spacers really sucked with the mig but Ryan said he’ll do the rest with his tig. So that’s awesome!

The photo insert tool would not let me put the pics in where I wanted. Sorry

Wait just a minute here. You mean you can weld in mis-alignment spacers??? Isn't that cheating? Great progress.
