I'm estimating my trailer at about 6200-6500 lbs? (dry weight is 5500 lbs---I've not weighed it) It's VERY similar in weight to my Jeep on a trailer (I've not weighed that). The temp didn't get over 200* (probably 180-185ish) even on the longish pull out of Heber to the Jordanelle summit or the shorter but STEEP pull out of Jeremy Ranch (topped that at about 50 mph with a somewhat nasty headwind).

Just remember that you want to keep that tc locked as much as possible, so if you can't pull 4th locked... put it in 3rd ;) That's a light trailer, the blazer on my bubba's is 8K :ugh:

One of the reasons we bought that trailer, because it's light. I've towed the other one in the pic. I weighed it at Flying J in SLC. 9100 lbs with just camping gear. It's a towhauler that can hold at least two four wheelers so it could be 10K pretty easily.

Just to add, I am reading the trans temp directly from the vehicle computer and the hottest my 5r110 has ever got was 170º, that was towing a 17K pound fifth wheel in July.

As far as what Ford Sr. Techs have advised me this is the most accurate place to get temp readings, the second most accurate is the pressure port like in the picture.

The next thing you want to get is a Maghytec pan. I just got one for my birthday, I havent put it on yet, but man it is super nice and it holds 8 qts over stock.

Food for thought.

On mine Marc, right after I put my gauge in like 6 months ago. It would read around 190-200 on highway unloaded. Loaded it would get almost 225-30. I thought this was too high or I might have a bad gauge etc. I relplaced the cooler bypass hose for about 35 bucks and it fixed everything, I can't get it past 200 towing loaded in 105 degree temps.

You just replaced the hose, didn't eliminate it?

Yep, something like that it's a metal tube that connects the return line and feed line to the cooler, its mounted right in front of the lines almost against the transmission. It's supposed to be a pressure sensitive tube/valve that if your cooler gets clogged it still give fluid flow to the rear of the trans, but at the expense of heat. Made my trans temp drop almost 40 deg, in some cases

WJ ZUK; I still need to do this. Any lingering bad affects from doing the mod?

(getting nervous about the tranny as it approaches 200K)

Great thread. I've been wondering what I could do to help with tranny cooling and I need to get my gauges installed that have been sitting in my garage for a year now.

Sheesh marc, digging up the old;). I just replaced the tube with a new ford part my cost was somthing like 35 bucks and all is good. I have the 6.0 cooler in mine and I just got back from 108 degree weather in cedar towing and I topped out at 185

I've gotten up to about 210, but that was with mostly stop/go/crap traffic with the trailer on. Just looking for a few strategies and remembered this thread had some good info and something I'd forgotten to check out.

What 6.0 cooler are you referring too?

The 6.0 ford power strokes have an absolutely huge stock cooler. Something like 18x 26 inches or something. They pretty much bolt in to the 7.3's with some new hoses. It is supposed to drop temps by about 40 degrees. The bad news is they are around 250 or more new if you get a new deal. I got mine used for 75 bucks on ebay

still have your old one? Im trying to bump up the expedition for longer trips and with putting the new trans in, pan, and electric fan a larger cooler couldnt hurt.

No I threw it out a long time ago. From what I understand having a bigger pan with more fluid does not accomplish that much compared to a bigger cooler. Because you just have more hot fluid sitting there and it takes longer to cool the whole pan down since there is more fluid.

I originally read the same things when the larger pans first started popping up then when folks started adding these air dams it started to help, who knows if it even helps keep it 20* cooler while towing it will be worth the 100$. As soon as it and the temp guage are in Ill do a side by side to see if it helps or not.

It'l probably take longer to get hot, though. That would help out on most of the hills, or in town driving, no?

The bad news on that is towing usually is for a longer amount of time so it would get hotter more quickly and stay hotter, but hey whatever my cooler keeps mine cool no problem. Plus it only cost my 75 bucks;)
