could it be true??

So, I just filled up my 'Runner that I just got streetable, and it got about 22 mpg's w/ the 22re, 5.29's, 35's, auto tranny, and a/c blowing half the time. I thought that it must be wrong, but I checked my speedo on the way back from Tooele against the mile markers and it's dead-on!

I DIDN'T KNOW THIS WAS POSSIBLE!

That's better than I got when the runner was bone stock! And it's looking like this tank will be the same -so far 130 miles, and about the same on the gas gauge! This is probably 2/3 freeway miles, but 60-70mph freeway miles, which is not putting along for the runner.

SWEET!

1. You should stop by and say hello next time you're in town. :D

2. I think it's totally possible. The tires/gearing probably puts you in a sweet spot for efficiency, and off you go. :D

Maybe I will! Where do you live? and congrats on the U4 prez! I've been recently thinking to myself that I need to re-sign up or whatever and get more involved. Keep us updated on what we can do!

Ethanol hurts mileage, not help. ;)

I'm guessing your speedo is off a fair amount, making you think you've traveled farther than you really have.

I have the same gearing and same size tires, I'm getting 17 mpg. And I know my speedo is about 5 mph fast. So that would make it even worse. Of course my runner has almost 240,000 on it, and could probably use a tune up.

Isn't this backwards? Larger diameter tire will travel further, and register less actual miles driven..

I know that I could easily hit low-mid 20's on the hwy with my old '85 4runner on 37's and 5.39's..

35's and 5.29's is not the same as 37's and 5.29's. :)

You are correct, your 37's would register less miles driven. However, if your speedo shows you drove 100 miles and you really only drove 50, then you calculate your mileage based on the 100 miles showing on the odo, you'll get really killer mileage. :D

Ah gotcha.. For what it's worth I used a gps to log mileage in the 4unner.. Nowadays I just increase my miles driven on the odo by afew added percent, and divide that by how many gallos I filled up with..

I went to Moab this weekend, and my truck with the efi 22re, stock gears in the axles, lifted on 35s, manual trans, ac blowing cold... From my house in lehi to Wellington, I only took 4 gallons!!

I originally thought that my speedo must be way off to get these figures, so, like I mentioned in my first post, I checked the ODO, which I think is tied-in with the speedo, against the mile markers on my way back from Tooele and it was dead-on. In 35 miles, the ODO registered 2/10's of a mile slow. That's less than 1/100th off if my math is correct, so I'm pretty sure it's not registering a different speed than I'm going.....unless the speedo and ODO are in fact run off a completely different sensor, but even if they were, the reading should be the same, unless the ODO is using GPS or something (which it's not)

I'll download an app on my phone today to test GPS speed against what my speedo says.

Isn't 5.29's and 35's supposed to be pretty much similar to the stock gearing and tire combo?? Although keep in mind that my auto tranny axles came with 4.38's or something like that instead of the 4.10's.

actually, come to think of it, it doesn't matter what the speedo says, only what the ODO says because that's what I make the calculations with, and I know that my ODO is dead-on based on my trip back from Tooele, SO I AM getting this MPG!!!!!

SWEET!!!

(and just so you all know, it was exactly 244 miles on exactly 11 gallons, and that was topping it off to the brim so that I wouldn't have to calculate it in my head using 10.5 gallons, which is where the pump stopped at.)

It's kinda wierd that I'd get better mpgs now than when it was bone stock (the best I got was 19mpg) -Any ideas on why??

The MPG that you are seeing is not all that uncommon with your setup. I'd prefer a manual, as that auto is a pile of crap IMO.. You may see a few more MPG's out of a manual tranny. Just wait til you're driving that breadbox with a 40mph headwind.. You'll be between 2nd and 3rd @ 5-6k rpm's and doing maybe 45mph. ;)

Ya, I did have a head wind on the way out to Tooele, and it was happy at about 50-55 w/ the Overdrive off. The way back was nice though! I thought I'd hate the auto too, but I actually love it! I'm not the kind of driver that has to get up and go quickly from every stop light, or be in the fast lane on the freeway, so the auto is fine! I can be at 55-60 mph by the time I'm merging onto the freeway, so it works for me! I also like that I have the extra hand always. Saying that, I"ll also say that I have a '94 pickup with the manual, and it is a bit funner to drive. I can't wait to get a front DS so that I can see if I like the auto off-road. Hopefully it'll do as well with the stock auto/case as I've read about on pirate.....we'll see.

One thing that I like also, is that with the auto and a detroit in the rear, I rarely lock up the detroit driving around the streets, but when I had a manual w/ the detroit in the rear, it seemed to lock and unlock all the time. Kind of annoying.

when you filled up before your trip did you top it off? or did you just go till it clicks. If you want the most accurate mpg calcutations then you should just go till it clicks everytime. Because if you just went till it clicks before the trip and then stuffed it full after the trip. then you are putting that extra half a gallon or so into your calculations and upping your MPG's

^ what are you talking about? You use the number of gallons pumped in the equation. It doesn't matter at all when it 'clicks'.

Just for fun, fueleconomy.gov says an '85 auto is good for 18 city and 20 freeway. So if you are driving 50-55 you should be doing pretty good on the mileage. Also 5.29s and 35s is pretty close to stock gear ratio meaning that the odometer should be within 1% accuracy if you believe Roger Browns info http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/4R_TechInfo.shtml -- 28 in stock tires and autos usually came with 4.30s in the diffs...

I was trying to find a cheap suv with good mileage for my little brother a few weeks ago and it was hard to find something that compared to a 22re. They are still hard to find at a decent price as well.
