Mental health: it’s ok to talk.

TOTALLY agree with this. A guy just needs something.

Dirt bike has been my therapy for the last few years and I have been in way better shape (mentally and physically) than I’ve been in awhile. But 6 weeks off the bike with no ride planned and cold and snow……
I get it. Finding that something in the winter months is tough.

I was talking to my cousin about this a few weeks back, which is why I felt I should reply (it was fresh on my mind). My cousin, who is ironically a therapist told me he calls old friends, current friends or family as something to look forward to weekly. He has a dedicated time of the week where he randomly picks someone from his phone contacts and calls them just to say hi and keep up. Mentally it's something to look forward to and just talk about life, the good, the bad (and the ugly sometimes). Just an idea that doesn't take long and takes zero money.

I have had a winter depression for 10-15 years now. It got significantly better once I put a furnace in my garage, which allows me to be productive sometimes at night and weekends. But the biting cold and lack of light make winter pretty lousy for me. We will snow bird as soon as it's a possibility financially.

I think on top of the winter depression I have come into a mid-life depression. I am fat and out of shape, but have no will or desire to change. I want to be outside, but can't because I work too much (and now throw in winter) The things I love the most (motorcycles and camping) have become more of a hassle than a benefit. It seems harder and harder to line up hanging out with friends. Kids make life a drag with the drama and school garbage to deal with.
I told my wife a few weeks ago I was in a mid-life crisis.. she said I can do or buy whatever I want.. But I'm still too cheap to go buy anything. (I also know that spending money wont actual make anything better)

Maybe we should both make a little more effort to head south a few times for the winter.. sharing costs could make it easier. And being called out on being a lazy turd would be good for me.

100% agree. I’m admittedly my own worst enemy lately.

But ya buying things is definitely a very temporary high

I learned that with the brand new truck last year. No regrets on the new dirt bike tho

I am relating to this lately. I think my new truck has ended up being a burden rather than the key to more fun like I hoped.

Anybody else have seasonal issues?

It’s pretty funny. When I was young I lived for winter. I would chase snow. I would be snowboarding with a mere skiff on the ground. That’s when I was happy

Now that I’m older and can no longer snow board the winter gets me down. Go to work in the dark, get home in the dark, too cold to want to do anything. Inversion makes things even worse. I need sunshine and warm.

Last year my wife made me go tanning a few times and I think it did help. Bi-weekly trips to St George seemed to be better tho. With diesel prices I probably will only make it down there once or twice this year.

I could totally see myself being a snow bird if I was able
I do. I talked to my doc about it a little and he put me on testosterone supplements and suggested a therapy lamp. I've been on testosterone for about 6? months now and it seems to have helped a bit but haven't tried the lamp yet. I'm moving from graveyard shift and I expect that'll help too.

But yeah, mostly I just need sunlight. I wonder if I can get a prescription for a flight to Baja.

I've been making it a goal to get out every Saturday on the mountain or on the bike. @jeeper and @ChestonScout you're welcome to join me. Saying yes to opportunity even when it's uncomfortable got me out of a huge funk when I was 24.
Routinely doing something for just me gives me something to look forward to and gives me purpose when I feel down.

My 6 year old also started a gratitude journal for his 1st grade project. I believe that will help me too.

I love the idea of weekly just calling a friend to talk. We need community and we lack that in our society. I love dirt bikes and jeeps and RME because those things literally have saved me. I am somewhat of a social recluse but I am trying to branch out and do things with other people more often.

Mesha once sent me a random text that really had an impact on me. Hickey just randomly started sending me reels on IG. Jeeper decided to go on a trip to buy a dirt bike with me out of the blue when we didn't really know each other. I see many of you guys on a very rare and very random time frame but when I do, you are my people and that feels really good, at least to me. I think we all need to get out together more often, meet and greets, snow shoeing, biking, maybe even wheeling.

There's goto be a piece of property somewhere we could leverage near Green River or Washington or something we could all co-op into? Build a pavilion with a nearby fire pit and basically little else?

Whoever shows up we hang out with for the day or weekend or whatever
This has been a hot topic of discussion over on ExpUt in the past. I don't think anything has ever come of it, but I know there's interest.

Properties out in the west desert seem to come up the most often, but I think we should scrape up a couple mil and buy Woodside.

I’ve always found that area so fascinating. Always wished I stopped and spent more time there but it was also kinda creepy. Did the trail nearby several years ago and hit a couple tire puncture traps on the way back.

Like somebody had set them after you drove in? Because that's roughly the area where Dennis went hiking up in the cliffs and came down to find a guy with a rifle waiting for him by his truck, several years back.

A couple years ago @cruiseroutfit @Bub and I found a severed goats head while checking out woodside. The creepiest part was that the horns had been whittled down like knife blades. 403FE339-54E5-408C-A0BF-CBCEBF981C8C.jpeg

Not entirely sure, but we came out the same way we went in. Didn’t have any issues until we got back to the trailers. Loaded up the jeep and then noticed flat tires. No nails, just punctures so must have been set in boards under the dirt/silt area near the river.

Sounds like a real fixer-upper.

Property by Starvation would be the best. Pick right and you have a trail on your land!

I remember that... creepy. A relative (son) of the owner was living there for quite some time. He was stealing gas, generators, tools, etc out of the beds and trailers of people riding in the Swell. As I recall he even stole a SxS.

The biggest problem with Woodside, the $3.9M price tag they had for the place. I mean it's a huge parcel but then what?

Not to ruin your spooky Woodside story, but I would argue that is a pronghorn that has shed its horns (sheaths).

Hmm that would make more sense. I remember looking at the horns and admiring how skinny and sharpened they were. No idea where the body was, we never found it.
