Storage room shelving - What do you love?

We are remodeling the storage room in our basement. The previous shelves were a mix of plastic and steel/particle board Costco specials. To be fair they've worked just fine but we want something cleaner, more adjustable and uniform. I've looked at some wall mount options which are super tidy. I could do more of the same stuff we had before but I know some of you have built in the recent years. What did you use?

I have a mix in my basement, but if I were to do it again I would go with the heavy duty Metal Shelves with adjustable heights like they sell at Costco/Sams/Home Depot (very similar if not identical to your top photo).

If food is the primary storage I would go with 12"-15" deep and adjustable height. This helps eliminate things getting "lost" behind each other and increases turnover in storage so that everything stays with in its shelf life.

I would start with getting an idea of what it is you want to store. If you have a majority of uniform sized totes that you need to put on shelves, get the shelf that fits your totes best. For example, if you buy a shelf that is one or 2 inches wider than the others does that get you three totes per shelf instead of just two?
I think the depth of a shelf also makes a big difference, depending on what items you are trying to store. A shallow shelf can hold 1.5 boxes of some food storage we have, whereas the deeper shelf can hold a full two boxes.

Mix of food storage, big storage totes of photos, camping gear, books, etc. I think I'd like some 15-16" and some 24" deep for the totes.

I love the largest heavy duty ones from Costco and they go on sale. I've had one outside with extra siding on it for over a year

take the opportunity to 'rebox' stuff. I built some wood shelves in my garage, and designed them around the black and yellow Costco totes. Yea, its a bit more cost to add to a project, but you can design your space around a uniform size and shape. I can stack two of those totes on each shelf, and theyre all labeled and organized.

I really like those, I have them in my garage. We ended up buying on extra just to get enough cross bars to have some smaller shelf heights. I reached out to the manufacturer to buy individual cross bars and it was going to cost significantly more than just buying another shelf unit from Costco.




Perhaps I need to get over having different shelve units. The ones like Carls would rock for bins and big stuff (as they do in my garage) but are horrible for a can of soup, bottles and cold cereal :D

The Mrs really wants these:

We have these in our closets and they work great with all the different types of shelves and hangers you can get for them. At least that's what my wife says because my clothes only occupy 1/32nd of all the available closest space in the house.

We've had the costco industrial shelves in our garage and basement since we moved in. I like them and know I'll never have to worry about them falling apart. I have been buying the brute bins to go with the garage storage shelves with blue tape labels on the outside as a solution to disintegrating cardboard boxes. The brute bins aren't cheapest solution but they stack really well and I won't ever worry about them breaking. With my in-laws in our basement we really don't have much storage. Everything is either in the garage or stuffed in our closets. I like having the bins to be able to get things put away but still be easily found when I need something from them.
