Jordan River Kayaking map

Does this count as 'trail'?

I was thinking about the warm weather and the fun kayaking I can't wait to do on our new annual 4th of July Green River trip..

However, as a scout leader we would canoe a small section of the Jordan River. I enjoyed it, but wanted to go farther, and never could find a reliable source for safety issues and such.

I found this site today with a very well documented guide!

Even though I was raised in Rose Park, and even though many parents in that area raised us to believe that the Jordan River was filled with dead bodies, disease, and other icky things… this sounds like fun.

I remember my older brother floating the river section with the canoe chute with his scout group many decades ago. My mom was convinced that they would see a dead body that day. 😂

They've been doing a lot of work on the river. It certainly looks cleaner than it did when I first moved to SLC.

We called it Polio water. But I rafted it many many times as a kid. We'd take our pool toy rafts from Thrifty on the bus to 1700 S. and float down to the Rose Park golf course.

My mom demanded that we not walk along the river on our way home from school. So we walked the section between 10th North to 7th North every day.

Worth mentioning... Consulting a map is wise.

As kids, we had been putting in at the golf course and paddling up river as far as we could and floating back down, or carrying our rafts to Riverside park and floating down from there, or even floating down from the golf course and carrying our rafts home for a couple of summers, before we got the idea of taking our rafts on the bus for a good long float down river.

What we did not know... Is that the surplus canal at California and Redwood is NOT the Jordan river...

Our first bus trip, we put in there at California and Redwood. Didn't figure out we had effed up until we were out past the International Center. A helluva long walk home on a hot July day for three twelve year old boys without a penny or drink of water between us. We started out carrying our rafts. But eventually, one by one, resorted to dragging them behind us. Until we could see we had worn holes in them and abandoned them. We were almost to North Temple and Redwood by then. A real learning experience...

Thats a long walk back..

I think there is 2 different places where the canals divert off that the map cautions about being in the right one.

We used to do it all the time in our scanoe when I was a kid. I'll have to ask my dad what section we did
