Actually, we (Wasatch Cruisers) are spooling up another tech night at my shop where we build ropes. Full disclosure, I don't think it's much cheaper if any at all to buy bulk US made rope and then make your own ropes. @Paul R purchased a few thousand feet for our group at a wholesale deal he was able to source. Perhaps he can do another group buy.

2 Jeeps, a thirsty Buick, a Lincoln and a PJ trailer. I don't think those even add up to the cred of a RAV4? Why did my wife sell that GX470? Maybe I can get away with a Toyota T-shirt and try to blend in?

Doesn't bother me in the slightest, others may be grossly offended. The group I do the most work with (I4WDTA) is comprised of members around the world and from many different segments of the industry, OE trainers from Ford, folks doing Rivian and Ineos training, folks that work regularly with GMC and MB, the list goes on. Best practices, updates in gear, use and technology and teaching skills and methods span all makes models and when I think of my favorites 'students'... they don't have a brand allegiance, just the vehicle they currently use/own or will be assigned in the future. I did a great deal with Toyota & Lexus this last year and obviously that's easy for me to personally connect with and croon about for hours on end.

I had a really neat opportunity this last summer to go spend time at Ford's Romeo Proving Grounds doing some co-training and continuing education with their proving grounds staff and sets of engineers that work on the Bronco and Raptor platforms. I enjoyed sharing recovery tips and tricks and then leveled me up on the Bronco and Raptor platforms. Fun stuff











And getting some time on their wet slip track was damn cool and extremely humbling. I want/need to take some high speed and car handling classes.

What’s everyone’s opinion of what winch rope to get. Sounds like SK75 is the right stuff for our kind of winching. Looks like there are a few options within that spec. Do I need to spend $300 on masterpull vs $100 on Amazon? Hard to find specs on Amazon but it looks like theirs may only be SK65.

Also, what’s your take on roller vs hawes? Doing some research I found quite a few people still use a roller. Thought that was a no-no.

The problem with Amazon is knowing what you actually get. The places is chuck full of counterfeit merchandise, fake ratings, etc and Amazon proper isn’t receptive to policing that. I like JM Rigging (Utah local and part of the community), C4RS, Safe-Xtract, etc. all offer SK78.

Roller fairleads absolutely work with synthetic and some of the best fairleads on the market are just that, check out Hawse Pro for example. Just don’t use an older fairlead with roller surfaces marked up from wire rope use as that can/will damage the synthetic rope. Same goes for your pulley blocks, if they have been used for wire rope, don’t start using them for synthetic.

So how much do I need to spend on trustworth 20k+ rated line? I want 100’ and will probably cut it down to 60’ and 40’ and put the 60’ on the winch then make an extension out of the other end. I’d like to make shackles too.

That depends on your budget and brand preference. I recommend a few brands above, they all have ecommerce sites with pricing on their various synthetic offerings.

A "5:1" as rigged per Yankum actually produces 3:1 advantage. That's a 40% loss. I suspected 30%+ but honestly didn't expect it to quite hit 40%.

Admittedly, the traditional pulley block (ARB) as he tested also had more loss than I've seen in similar testing results. But using a two pulley blocks in a 4:1-SB still netted him 3.4:1 in testing.

That said, the losses as presented all check out to me, ARB pulley block included. The loss of the pulley block is exactly why we add a 25% SM onto the GC+GF+DR method for calculating Total Resistance. So I'm certainly not advocating you dismiss a recovery ring that you already own, rather just plan on allowing for a bit more efficiency loss in your load calculations AND watch for damage to rope and/or soft shackles due to heat (the efficiency loss is heat). Many are using them with great results.

I would have loved to see the same test procedure done with varying loads, say 2K, 5k, 10k and even 20k with the 3:1, 4:1 and 5:1. Does that loss percentage stay linear? I suspect no.

PS, those Crosby StaightPoint 12T Bluetooth dynamometers he's using, they are the cats whiskers, a cool $5400 each. I'm assuming he rented them? I'm working towards a couple for testing. You can get equivalent product sans Bluetooth for half that cost
