I grabbed my boy a used HPI baja truck for his birthday. He's already broken it - he ran into something, and now the motor is spinning at full speed any time the battery is plugged in, regardless if the switch is on or off. The heat sink on this doohickey was crazy hot,and I guess this is the Electronic Speed Control - is it pretty likely that he fried this, or could something else be the culprit?

Taking the batteries out of the controller didn't help. Turning the truck off didn't help. I'm pretty certain it's all stock except for the battery, which is a Traxxas.

I'm not familiar with the HPI esc's but it is likely programable. Try looking up a reset to default procedure. Unhooking all connections to the motor and RX may help.

If the esc is toast there are many inexpensive, quality options out there. Also, make sure the TX trim and endpoint adjustments are at neutral.
