My wife gifted me a new RC crawler, It can have 4 wheel steering, do any of you think it's a worthy upgrade? I know if I get a three channel radio I can add it later, just wanting some real work experience.

Here is the crawler!

I spent a majority of the day yesterday building it and I've only completed the frame, suspension and axles...
I will be heading the WV Hobbies this evening to see what they might have.
Thanks for any input!

So I was asked about a write up on this, I figured why not? I wasn't sure if any of you knew what or how they were built, As you will see I already have a decent start on the build.
This is my third such build, however this is by far the most complicated.

Here is what the parts bin looks like at the moment.

Lots of little pieces...
But it has been fun building the axles and shocks.

I went out to see about a radio, servos and what not, I came home with my first upgrade! I guess they have gone to an electric speed controller rather than a servo controlled type.

This kit has a brushless motor compared to the brushed type in the box, FWIW, the ESC for a brushed motor was nearly $90 where this was $129, deal right?!? I have a sinking feeling this is going to be an expensive toy.

Well, so far, I'm at about 14 hours, I'm sure it could be done quicker, I had to take a couple things apart when what I thought was an 8mm screw turned out to be a 10mm screw and what not.

Anyhow here is another update...

Motor, t-case, DLs and Skid plate.

Bead locks anyone?
I haven't heard anything like it since I was a kid watching the Dukes of Hazard and tires were squealing on dirt roads, because I was squealing tires as I turned them to put in the next screw.

Extra parts are always acceptable, right?

Rolling chassis!
Flexin on the Kindle Fire!

There are still plenty of things to do, but first I need to paint the body, then I can put the bezel on upside down, clean up the wiring.
So far so good, I'm pleased.

Cr-01's are pretty cool scaler crawlers. 4 wheel steering isn't that cool and kills the scaler vibe. I am interested in what Kv brushless motor are you running, and what size of battery do you plan on using?

Looks like it's a Neu-Caslte 1406 4600Kv motor, I didn't pick it out, it was suggested to me by the people at WV Hobbies.
I haven't really looked into batteries yet, I don't know if I need a specific battery for a brushless motor or not, I haven't looked into it yet, sorry, before I was just going to run a 7.2V battery, I swear there is SO much to read up on the ESC and controller.

4600Kv is a pretty fast motor for a crawler.

Are you sold on running brushless?
What kind of driving are you planning on doing? (Crawling, bashing)

Mostly crawling, this is geared quite low, I don't know about others.
I know little about the goods and bads of brushed/non, the hobby people said the brushed wear out sooner due to lower RPM use as well as needed torque right off the bat.
I guess we shall see.
Did you have any knowledge on them?

Yeah this true with brushed motors, but if you buy a high quality brushed motor you will have no problems. I run a brushed and brushless motors. In my opinion if you want to run a brushless motor on a crawler I would run a sensored motor. Running non-sensored brushless motors will make a crawler super jumpy at low speeds.

Here is a site with all the info you could ever want.

Oh SHI.... This is getting spensive!
Just came back from the hobby shop nearly $300 short.
AND!
I still have things to buy.

Truth! I have probably $600-$700 in mine and I could easily just keep spending if I let myself.

Agreed completely on the 4-wheel steering. It's cool, but definitely takes away form the scalerness and unless you're trying to compete, takes away the fun too. I like slow crawling with the similar behavior of what you have in your real rig and you'll loose that with the 4-wheel steer (unless you've got the rear steer on your FJ :p)

No 4-wheel steering in my FJ40, but I have a friend trying to talk me into coil overs for it...
Thanks for the info, I could easily see me spending another $100 or so for a Battery, paint and whatnot.
