I heartily recommend "Clouds of Glory: The Life and Times of Robert E. Lee" (2014) by Michael Korda. Vivid and fascinating look at who Lee was and what he did before, during, and after the Civil War. Vivid and fascinating study of Lee's extended family going all the way back to Revolutionary War times and through the Civil War. Great looks at Lee's Confederate generals and the Union generals many of whom Lee knew first hand from serving many years in the U.S. Army. Vivid battle reconstructions which give great insight on the progress of the war on both sides.

Also I highly recommend for history buffs two other books I recently finished.
1) "The Romanov Sisters: The Lost Lives of the Daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra" (2014) by Helen Rappaport.
2) "Armor and Blood: The Battle of Kursk, The Turning Point of WW2" (2013) by Dennis Showwalter
