e-trex tracks anyone?

I just picked up an e-trex Legend C. According to the manual that came with my GPS I can transfer "tracks" or manualy created routes to and from the unit. I'm new to the area, never been off road around here, but if it's like other areas I've been there can be a maze of trails all hitting different areas from the same starting point. Having coordinates for a trail head or other interesting area would be a great start, but having a track to follow with a description would be even better. ie "This track starts at trailhead abc, is medium difficulty, and avoids the more extreme sections" or "here is a track to get you from the beginning of trail xyz up to a great hard to find camping area overlooking the canyon."

I haven't played around with it yet, but I'm sure there must be a way to trade tracks.

there are ways. The routes and tracks are just points linked together. Using a program like USAPhoto Maps exports them into excel spreadsheet for easy sharing.

Skeptic,
You might want to look at either:

http://www.easygps.com/default.asp

or

http://www.expertgps.com/default.asp

The first one is free and is great for backing up or storing waypoints, tracks and logs. The second one is much better (good enough that I bought it) and will do thing like overlay your tracks and waypoints on top of either aerial photos, topo maps, or even scanned maps. The photos and topos are downloaded from the USGS for free. (best use a fast connection for this though). It's a great piece of software. There are other things out there as well like fugawi that will do basically the same things.
Good luck.

here are some other programs that are great too

I have the Topo 5.0 and I love it... it does everything you can think of and then some... you can add ariel views along with satillite views... and it works with most GPS's... you can load it to your laptop and hook the gps up and drive and it will track your position and then you can save it to your hard drive and when you get home print it out or upload it to their website so others and go in and download it for their use!

I have a preferred customer card that gets me it for $69 instead of the $99 they sell it to everyone else....

I also use Topo 5.0. Hard to use program, but once you learn it, it's pretty amazing. For one thing, you can draw a track line anywhere you want and export it to your GPS. Then on your Garmin GPS of choice, select the track and hit the tracback button and follow along. I have done that a few times following trails.
