I just bought a 88 cherokee and it has a ton of play in the steering this is my first jeep just seeing if anyone has any ideas?

I was thinking the steering box?

I'm thinking one or more of the suspension and/or steering joints, rather than the box itself. Have you checked all the control arms, tie-rod, draglink, trackbar joints???

^ exactly

crawl under there and have someone turn the wheel back and forth whilst you watch for movement. sure the box could be worn out but it's typically tre's or the tracbar the majority of the time

I would agree with the above. a lot of the time its either the trac bar or the TRE's. but the box is possible...
