I've got a 96 4runner, and have been thinking about getting a roof rack/ basket for carrying extra gear or luggage. I'm looking for a rack that will not cover up my sun roof ( wife said so). Does anyone have any suggestions on what would be best? I'm looking for cheap or even used. I thought about building my own, but don't really know how they mount up.

I'm thinking of this.

Not sure what you are trying to put up there, but yakima usually sells accessory racks like that, that mount to the factory carrier rails. I'm trying to figure out how a roof top tent can mount to the one before I spend the money.

If you're just looking for a basket style rack, either what you posted, or the yakima/thule versions, or the Surco might be the cheapest route. (There was a guy on here selling a used Surco rack on here just a week or so ago...) I've previously had a Surco rack on a pathfinder (10 years ago) and I had regularly carried 150 to over 300 pounds on it. Don't know about those others. Gobi is also making racks for the 3rd gen now. Full length ones if you're into that. They look kinda neat, but I don't like now the front mount feet attaches (or don't attach really). And they're $$$$. And then there is BajaRacks. Same basket style rack and also flat style racks.

Personally, I'll be putting a roof tent up top of my 4runner at times and need something of the flat variety. I've tried to find something similar to make one of those j-moose style racks and I've not come across anything that will work for the size I need.

I'm pretty much set on one of the flat style Bajaracks.

This is what i made for my Cruiser

I left the ends open to carry a canoe and made hiLift jack mounts and a tire mount. The towers are made by SureCo. I bought them from autoanything.com. It worked out well and was inexpensive to build.
