Birds - Hard!

Took these in the backyard while smoking my Sunday morning cigar this morning. Nothing special, neither the birds themselves (I actually can't stand these and normally shoot them with my air rifle, not my camera...) or the pictures. But, I'd be embarrassed to say how many frames I shot just to get a couple even half way decent looking shots. Getting these little buzz bombs in something that looks like "focus" is hard!

Any tips on getting these kind of shots? Certain places and times, I see my fair share of raptors, I'd love to get some good shots of them. Any techniques that could improve my odds of turning an opportunity that presents itself into a decent picture would be appreciated!

I do not know much about wildlife photography, hard to do with a 17-55.. But I like those shots
