For 2024, Bonneville Speed Week is August 3 - 9

I've been wanting to go and spectate for years and have never made the trip out. Each year it catches me off guard and I think, 'next year'! Well, I'm tired of missing out... I want to attend Bonneville Speed Week this year!!

I made my first trip to Speed Week in 1975, and have been there many times since. My last trip to Speed Week was in 2018. I like to camp at the bend of the road to the salt and talk with the others there. In 2018, I waived over a guy driving a 1934 Pontiac hearse powered by a 12 valve Cummins. As we sat there having a few brews, several other outfits stopped and added to the gab fest. You can also wander through the pits and can usually strike up conversations with the drivers and crews. Sometimes, they will even invite you to pitch in to help.

During the 2010 Speed Week, my wife was asked to model for some photos with a very radical rat rod, so that made her day.

I went a few years ago. Take a shade canopy, binoculars, drinks, lunch, etc. We took bicycles so we could pedal over to the pits from where we set up. It's like a giant car show along with the salt flat cars. People in the pits were happy to talk about their cars. Definitely worth seeing.

I have been out several times. The first Sunday is the best day if you can only make one day. About 14 years ago I ran my Camaro in the Utah Salt Flats 130 Club.

I’m in. Last time I went I had an absolute blast. I liked all the oddball engines with crazy turbos and/or superchargers… sweet.

I took a big sombrero, thick soled shoes and a camelbak full of water—really glad I did!

I went out there a few times in the early aughts to take pictures back when I was all about shooting on film. I've got a stack of B&W photos somewhere from the pits and the starting line. Its pretty cool. But yeah, big hat, dark sunglasses, and as much water as you can carry are a must!

OOOOHHHHHHH..........I'm free that weekend......right now. I don't have a white gladiator, so would my red Raptor be acceptable to associate with?
