Dodge Dakota T-case issues?

Okay I need some schooling on this.

My friend has an 02 Dakota 4x4 with the 5.9V8 and and automatic transmission 4 door. It has AWD, 4WD and 4LO. When it is in AWD it makes a horrific busted gear noise and it will not move when shifted into any gear. It does however move under its own power when in 4HI and 4LO acting completely normal. I am not familiar with these things at all, but I have a feeling that some of the newer Jeeps share this same t-case...

Assuming its a center differential or viscous coupler what will it take to fix it? Should I just look for a new t-case altogether? I couldn't tell what model it is but I will look tomorrow night for sure. I have several friends with these Dakotas/Durango's and I swear its one thing after another

Thanks for any help!

Andrew
