We're getting ready to leave on a massive road trip in a about a week, will be back in late August. I'm looking for recommendations on things to see!

We're doing all the typical stuff - Disney World, OBX, DC, NYC, Niagra Falls... Now I'm looking for things I wouldn't have thought of, especially things that could be done in a long afternoon?

The map doesn't show all of our stops, but shows the general direction we're traveling.

DC.... Hit the "mall", the Iwo Jima memorial, any Smithsonian museums you can (I haven't been to those but want to) and whatever else interests you around there. If you're driving, you'll run across A LOT of Civil War and Revolutionary war battlefields that would be very interesting to see. Gettysburg looks to be somewhat on your route?

If you know when you will be in DC call Senator Mike Lee's office and schedule a tour of the capitol. His office will take you on a private escorted tour and you get to see the back walk ways under the streets of DC. Also his office can get you setup on the waitlist for a White House tour.

In Pennsylvania hit up Gettysburg battlefield.

You want a lasting impression while in DC? Go to the Holocaust Museum and stay and watch the film. You could spend a week in the Smithsonian alone.

Check out the Lincoln hwy association website. There's some cool sections of that road and history. One part of it is still brick and mortar I think.

Great suggestions so far, keep them coming.

This is one I've wondered about... I went to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp (in Germany) last year with the wife. Wondering if the US perspective would be worth it?

Vietnam memorial is impressive as well. Black granite descending into the ground while all the rest are white marble going up.

You could make the ultimate battlefield tour happen. Appomattox, The Wilderness, Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, Harper's Ferry, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg. I'm sure you have better things to do than hit all these battlefields though, but make sure you take in Gettysburg. Even if you only have one day it is well worth it and leaves a lasting impression.

I'm envious you have this opportunity, lately we have been watching a lot of historical shows and documentaries on PBS/UEN/KBYU and realized we need to travel more, so much history to see and experience that reminds us of the great sacrifice that went into building this country. Having grown up along the east coast I agree with the battlefield tours, you will find it hauntingly surreal and feel a deeper connection to your forebears than ever before.

Mt Mitchell in NC (highest point east of the Mississippi), Key West (closest point to Cuba), South of the Border (neat tourist trap on the NC/SC border), NYC (Times Square, maybe see a show being filmed?), visit both the Atlantic ocean AND the Gulf of Mexico

Id go up to new hampshire maine and vermont too. Beautiful areas. Hit up the battlefields in MA too. Maybe hit up the little women house in concord to get brownie points with the Mrs. If you want. I see you have Barnstable county as a waypoint. Is that a set destination or just a really far east point you randomly chose? I ask because I'm from there.

Spent a week a couple summers ago in Up State New York. Hit Niagara Falls and really enjoyed the LDS Church History Sites in the area.

Second the Florida Keys and New Orleans comments as well.
