HP Sucks....OK Computers SUCK

SO, I am trying to rid my wife's comp of the virus that curses it when all of a sudden it starts to smell like hot electrical in my office....

Needless to say, the fan wouldn't turn on, the computer went into "thermal" mode and shut down....

So now it is lying on the floor in pieces--I took the power supply out and apart and now the fan runs.....what a piece of junk!

yes, I would have to agree...computers suck...my best suggestion in this case is to go buy a new power supply and/or case fan (which ever one quit working)...they can be had for fairly inexpensive and even if its working right now it will likely quit again...

Can a virus cause the fan to shut down? or is that all thermally controlled by the power supplies circuitry?

fans go out all the time, when it does the processor gets hot. Replace the fan and carry on........

just weird it did it at the same time that the thing started actin screwy...It's hard wired, I will pick one up and solder it in...

well, fans are controlled thermally and just by a power source, some will cycle, some will always be on if the computer is on, so technically, yes a virus could kill the command in the bios to the fan, but I have personally never heard of that...

if you think your problems were virus related, you might have just run into crashing due to overheating. I would say that you might not have had a virus at all. My video card kept getting real hot while playing doom 3 and it crashed the program...turns out my radeon 9600 had no cooling fan for some farked up reason so I put one on and solved those problems.

I was kinda thinkin along those lines....but Norton and Windows popped up and found Trojan.Horse

get off the porno sites....and use firefox for hells sake...internet explorer just asks for wicked bad viruses. Firefox is almost exactly the same setup it will even import all your bookmarks...DO IT!!!
