I still hope we find out what happened - I can't imagine "a loud pop" coming from pushing the clutch in. This is such a sketchy obstacle by the proximity to the river that I can't imagine it happening from something inadvertent.

It sounds like he was on his way up and parked above the obstacle?

I feel bad for his family and those that witnessed it.

Even if you have an automatic, your t-case could pop out of gear and cause the same "neutral" issue. I would be terrified as well. That looks like a nasty spill with horrible consequences in the best of situations. Having just reportedly entered the vehicle, I'd be surprised if seat belts were even attached at that point?

I do feel for the family/witnesses and hope they all find some solace in that these guys were enjoying doing what they love when something went horribly wrong. I would like to know what happened as well but I doubt any of us will ever know for sure. Anyone that has run that trail has had evaluative thoughts of something like that happening to them or someone in their group.
