My shop build

Moved back to Utah after living in Oregon for 8 yrs. I bought a total fixer upper house and have been remodeling it and building the shop since Nov. I am just now finishing up my shop build and I thought I would share it on here. Feels good to be at the finish line :greg:.

Its far from the biggest/baddest thing ever, but, its a long ways from where I was when I was working out of my 2 car garage. 25x40x14, 12x12 roll up doors. Biggest I could build and still be legal. I contracted out the concrete and the building itself. I just didnt have the man power to do either of them. I did finish things up by doing electrical, insulation, OSB interior walls and paint (15 gal ).

It fits my buggy and "normal" cars really well. My Dodge is a pretty tight fit if youre wanting to do work on it though. 30x40 would have been perfect for me.

Here are some pics. First one is my previous setup. 2 car garage with (4) 4' T12 lights. This shop has (24) 4' T8. The other two are before pics of when I moved in. People that lived here had Turkins (half Turkey half Chicken)????

Forgot to mention. This is a pole building. Here is the start where they did the poles. Glad the backyard was a mess to begin with because they made an even bigger mess. Oh yeah, church right next door.

After getting all the concrete poured (LOTS $$$$) all they did was lay a 2x6 flat against the poles. That is how they were able to attach the metal to the sides.

Then skip ahead... I got all elec, insul, OSB wall and paint done. I went with white. I think its totally blah but I wanted a good light reflection. Then just standard organization stuff, shelves, benches, peg board etc,.

Stellar!

What kind of a budget were you working with if you don't mind sharing. I'm getting ready to start a 35x30 building in my back yard right now, likely going to go with a steel preman on footings but I'm interested to hear more about your pole construction, much cheaper than footing/cement work! You happy with it?

Last but not least one of the most confusing things for me was proper lighting. Like I said above, I used to have (4) 4' T12 fixtures and (2) of those were under the garage door. Needless to say I always struggled with light and hated it. The electrician that came and put my power under ground here said I only need (2) 4' x 4 bulb fixtures per bay. Glad I didnt listen to her. (24) total fixtures. You can get them for $10 each fixture at Walmart.

Here are some pics with each row turned off so you can see the difference it makes. Granted, the lights that are still on are not placed right but you can see a big difference, actually, pics dont show as well as in person.

more pics!!!

are you going to be doing commercial work, or just projects and bro-deals? :D

Right now I dont want to do full blown, over my head 4x4 work out of here. I dont feel like ruining my hobby right now :greg: I would like a project or to do work for people when possible though.

Well,... LOL I quit my job in Oregon and have been jobless since Nov. so I was as tight as could be and did as much work as I could do myself on this. I was totally shocked when I found out how much it would be. A buddy in OR had his pole barn built for 12k, thats what I was expecting. I got bids anywhere from 24k to 45k. I got lucky and my builder was starving in Jan so he matched my lowest bid, which happened to be a stick built shop.

Came out to just under 30k. I am totally happy with it. I cant wait to get to work and utilize it. Only thing I would change is the size, but I cant so...

Metal wasnt too much more. I wanted to go with it initially. Right now I am pretty happy with all wood though because I can drill just about anywhere and have a screw stick. Hard to do with metal or dry wall.

I feel the pain on the concrete-I'm about to do 12 yd tomorow and even with doing all the work myself it is $$$$$$$.

Wow. Thats a lot! I dont know how much I have but I sure felt for the guys who had to do it  Honestly it was weird having people work on my stuff. I never have been able to afford to do something like this till now.

I like it alot, my back yard shop is 25x44 with a huge door on the 25 end. I would rather have like you the 3 12' doors with a 30x50 shop but I'm not complaining. Mine is also a pole building but was here when we bought the place. Also the carport on the side of your shop will be nice to get the air compressor out of your shop, that will be my next project. I wish I had insulated when I moved in and I like your windows.
Very cool shop indeed.:greg:

My pour is an "L" shape but if it were straight it would be about 12'x85'. My neighbor said it would be a good time to find out how good my friends are.....I said I only have one friend, but I do have relatives!!!! :D My dad knows how to do the finish work and between him, me, one friend and 2 brothers in law we will handle the pour. It was the prep work that killed me. Removing 25 yd of dirt and spreading 35 ton of gravel was not very fun. Sorry for the hijack Dlux. I am still jealous!
