Big news from SUWA! In a press release issued December 3 2001, SUWA announced that they are petitioning the court for Intervenor status in the lawsuit that USA-ALL filed against the BLM in Utah last October.

SUWA's move here was predictable. Also predictable was SUWA's exaggerations and misrepresentation in their press release. “It's pure spin. And it's not particularly good spin either.” Said Brian Hawthorne, Director of USA-ALL. “SUWA's attorneys are competent and professional with a passion for their cause”, he said. “But this latest press release… well, let's just say it doesn't rate very high on the accuracy scale.”

SUWA's press release is flashy and contained lots of pithy quotes that no doubt will make great press. But SUWA's PR doesn't address the heart of USA-ALL's action; namely, that the BLM has wrongly used emergency actions to amend its land management plans without allowing lawfully mandated public involvement.

USA-ALL supports reasonable restrictions on ALL recreational access established through legally-required public process- SUWA supports ANY process, legal or otherwise, that will close lands to those they deem unworthy. We defend the system; they defend their narrow self-interest, regardless of the means chosen to reach those ends.

Hawthorne noted the difficulties of managing recreational activities on public lands. But he stresses that the BLM must follow the law and public land users are entitled to participate in actions that amend land management plans.

Hawthorne said, “SUWA is again defending the deceitful pattern of conduct used in the creation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Block any public involvement and just create new land restrictions on millions of acres by fiat."
