I finally found a 8274 after looking for some time. If you don't know about the 8274, here's a great link to get up to speed. - https://www.warn.com/the-history-of-the-warn-m8274-winch

My 8274 had seen better days, no idea when it last worked. The cable was kinked and frayed, it was dirty and the wiring had seen better days. I'm not planning on doing a full rebuild, so don't expect a total tear down. My plan is to update and modernize my winch, rebuilding the brake assembly, upgrading to the 4.6 HP electric motor (versus the original 2.5 HP) and a new solenoid control box. I'd also add some new synthetic rope for safety.

If you would like to see a very detailed rebuild with great tech and pics, here's a link-

First thing, I hosed the winch down, hit it with Simple Green and gave it a good scrubbing. Next, I used a aluminum cleaning agent to take it a step further. Once it was clean enough, I started the tear down.

I separated the upper and lower case, using a deadblow hammer. The gears inside looked great and I was happy to see what looked like oil down in the bottom. After pouring the contents into a pan, it became quickly obvious that it was more of a oil/water milkshake. :( There was a bit of debris floating around inside, too. I hosed it out with brake cleaner, added a little oil and spun the gears to keep the rust at bay.

The brake pawl was looking pretty rough, so I soaked it in Muriatic Acid, then hit it with the wire wheel. I decided to powder coat it and will probably do the same for a few other pieces to clean it up and make it look better.
