Shotgun Modification Laws in Utah?

Totally Awesome
Wondering if there are any specific laws as far as modifying shotguns?

I have a tactical Escort Pump Action shotgun. I'd like to add a folding stock with pistol grip to it. Maybe a red dot sight, Shoulder sling, magazine tube extension.

Its a pretty nice shotgun. It has a 18" barrel. Its mostly for home defense, and messing around shooting. I picked it up cheap at a pawn shop in Wyoming.

Thanks

Your big deal is the 18" barrel, anything shorter is a SBS. You can do anything with mag capacity you want and you can do a folder with no problem, you can run a pistol grip if you want. The laws do get a little muddy but the atf does say 18" barrel in some spots and 26" oal in others. There are people all the time trying to run the grey area, mossberg has a 14" barrel shotgun that hits the 26" mark and for some reason they get away with it because it is not shoulder fired and they say is not considered a Shotgun.

My advice would be to read the laws and do what you feel is best. If you are using it as a home defense gun, you better be legal or you will fry.

I thought the law was 16" barrel and 26" overall?? Maybe shot guns are different than rifles for this?

edit: Yep, just googled it and it is 18" and 26" overall for shotguns. Wonder why they are different from other rifles...

edit2: Doh! I JUST now saw sawtooth4x4 linked the rules. Might be time to step away from the keyboard, at least while I'm working.

The Mossberg I have seen that has the 14" barrel is not made by Mossberg, it is a custom gun. they are playing off the fact that they are starting with a factory pistol grip shotgun with a 18.5" barrel and seeing that pistols dont have a minimum barrel length they think they are ok. this is one of those grey areas I would stay out of, I thing you will be fine to put any stock you want on that Shotgun with the 18.25" barrel as long as if it is a folder it is over the 26" mark when it is folded.

Just fyi the way aft measures barrel length on a gun that might be questionable. Slide bolt / action all the way forward. Slide a rod or wood dowel down the barrel until it hits the bolt face. Mark the end of the barrel on the dowel. Pull out and measure.
At least that's how it was going when I was still working in fire arms 7 years ago. But seriously don't get caught making it to short. They take that crap seriously. I think that's why most make them 18.5". That little extra so there is no question. Haha.
