I have never done it but was looking to start this winter. I was looking for some snowshoes. Earlier this year but haven't found any in my price range. How long do you usually go out for?

BTW, we are building our own snowshoes as well, more for an activity, than as a cost effective alternative to buying professionally made shoes

My wife and I usually go out for about 2 hours, but we're not against a 4-5 hour trek every once in a while.

We bought tubbs brand snowshoes, and we couldn't be happier with them. I borrowed some regular atlas costco specials, and they were ok, but hiking in my tubbs is so much easier. The models we got were the flex alps and we love the flexible tail. It feels a lot less clumsy, flips up less snow, and I don't find myself clanking them together as much. The much cheaper Tubbs Flex esc model seems like a great bargain.

That's really cool. I saw this video online, and I had a few questions. Is this the method you'll be using?

It sounds like they got the article from Boy's Life. I'll see if I can dig up the info online. Do you mind if I come participate when you guys build them? I wouldn't mind building a few extra sets.

actually steve it was my idea, it was from when I was a scout, we made our own snowshoes too.

we are using 1/2" galvanized conduit, laced sort-of like a tennis racket with para-cord.

we will be doing most of the building next Wednesday the 11th.

I'm not gonna lie I am a cheap skate with an eye of a rich man. So I have been looking for the golden opportunity. I tried to talk Mesha out of his but he wanted to much. :D

These are what I really want. http://www.cascadedesigns.com/msr/snowshoes/ascent/lightning-ascent/product but I would settle for http://www.cascadedesigns.com/msr/snowshoes/explore/lightning-axis/product

I would need them in the 30" variety with tails of cause I'm not a small man.

I thought I had seen a post where you can rent them but I cant find it right now.

What kind of shoes do you wear? I saw some videos where people are wearing running shoes and not worrying about their feet getting wet. Sounds cold to me.

Mesha knows his stuff. I picked his brain too many times last year. I feel like I need to pay him for all the professional outdoor advice he gives me on a daily basis. Those MSRs are very nice. I was debating between those and the tubbs. Both work great, but I think you're right, you're going to want the big ones with the tails.

Outdoors Unlimited at BYU rents snowshoes:

$9/day, $36 for a week

I wear waterproof hiking shoes. My snow pants have built-in gaiters to cover my socks. If you're in deep stuff, your feet will get wet and cold with just running shoes.

I always just use a set of waterproof hikers to do it in, unless it is friggin' -20(exaggeration), then I use some warmer boots. but I don't usually snowshoe in super cold conditions, getting sweaty when it is that cold is a seriously bad idea.

we will also be bending ours up to look more like normal snowshoe frames, not with the narrow backs like the PVC ones in that video

Recreation outlet rents snowshoes as well. The rental price can go toward the purchase of snowshoes if you end up liking it.

Steve's flexible snowshoes are pretty awesome. I would love a pair of those. I like the MSR ascent series because they work really well for technical stuff. They are as much like a crampon as a snowshoe. If I was running in them I would choose the ones steve got.

I used to sell yukon charlies snowshoes. They were poop. However, starting this batch they built them using better decking material. They are worth what they are asking now. Before not so much. I bet I took back 100 pair that all broke in the exact same place.

Cool. Do you want to pick the route and set it up? Friday nights are usually best for me, but I can also do Tues and Thursday nights.

I have never picked a route or set up anything for snow shoeing. I usually just grab my cheap Yukon Charlies and head for the hills. I can certainly look into it, but my knowledge base would also be more in the Bountiful North area than the SL south area. Let me see what I can find. What do you like to do?
