I've got to say, this little trip turned out much more fun than expected! The weather cooperated with blue skies and sunshine, despite it being windy and chilly in the morning. The sand dunes were in great shape for blasting around in 4x4's and the washes had a fair amount of water running down them, which added another element of fun!
Our turnout consisted of; @jeeper and his neighbor in a new Kawasaki Teryx, @Jared and his son in their modded Teryx, @pELYgroso with his family in a well built JKU, @jeepercreeper in his built XJ and his friend and myself in the '48 Willys CJ2a.
We played in the dunes for awhile, then headed up the main wash and eventually around to the backside and into the canyons. We did some exploring, took a lunch break in a tight little canyon and found our way over to a trail that climbed out of one of the canyons. There were a few steep climbs that caught your attention and one had an optional line that was very steep, perched on top of an already high hill. @jeepercreeper gave it a shot and the front-end got very light, sliding downhill. I started to walk over to take some pics and help spot, but then the front end started to un-weight and it looked like there was a good chance he was going to loose it and roll down the hill! I jumped on the front of the XJ, @Jared pulled out a strap and 4 of us started pulling the Cherokee back in line, while jeepercreeper drove out of it! That was a close one! (I didn't get any pics of the sketchy part, too busy keeping the XJ tires on the ground!)
We ended up going out the way we came in, blasting down the main wash as quick as we each dared. I was doing my best to keep up with Jared's SxS in my 70 year old Jeep, but wasn't quite in the same race.
I think most everyone got a little sand & water splashed on them hauling arse down the wash, I took a face full a couple times!
From there, we split up... some heading out and a few others choosing to go blast around the dunes again. It was a good time, fun to see long-time RME friends on the trail again and great to meet new members.
