ZMotorSports 2011 JKUR Build Thread

I am new here but thought I would throw up some pictures of my latest Jeep build. It is not real time as I have owned it now for almost two years.

I bought the Jeep with only 3208 miles on the odometer and commenced building my "Dream Jeep". This is my daily driver and weekend wheeler.

More to come as I dig through the pictures. Also pictured here is the Warn Rockcrawler bumper/Powerplant combination that I purchased used just to get me by until I could fabricated my own bumpers.

The wife and I took off for a few days for some much needed R&R in Moab.

Getting ready to hook up the Jeep to the coach.

Only issue that I need to address. At full stuff and steering at full lock my tires just come in contact with the front bumper. A little trimming is in order as I don't want to add any more bumpstop because it flexes so nicely. The rear tires just come in contact with my inner splashshields so a little heating and forming of the inner shields will be necessary but very minor.

All in all a great short little getaway with the wife. I was pretty happy with the way the Jeep handled seeing as how it has undergone a few changes since last year.

Thanks for looking.

Looking great. Gemini and Bull Canyon have always been a favorite of ours.

Thanks, ours as well. In my head I had planned on doing Metal Masher after Gemini Bridges and then Poison Spider on Saturday but with my interference issues I didn't want to push my luck and damage a tire so we did a few scenic trails and will save the others for the next trip down when I have addressed my rubbing issues.

So I have about 4200 miles on my LS engine in the Jeep now and it has been running phenomenally. However, during the last several tanks of fuel I have been getting a P0442 code which is a small EVAP system leak, small as in less than .020” so usually the gas cap is the culprit. The gas cap is the original that came on my 2011 Jeep Wrangler so it is logical that it could have lost its seal. Rather than diagnose it because we were in the middle of my son’s LB7 injector project I simply stopped by my local Chrysler/Jeep dealership and bought a new cap. I prefer the OEM caps because they have the provisions for the lanyard whereas the aftermarket ones do not, at least on the majority from my experience. Well, the gas cap was NOT the source of the leak.

Friday night I had a little time after getting home from work so I decided to pull the Jeep into the shop and properly troubleshoot it and correct the problem.

I hooked up my trusty old OTC smoke machine (Leak Tamer) in preparation for diagnosing.

Turned on the smoke and you can see by the flow meter that a leak is present as it is pegged.

I looked everywhere and could not see smoke coming out of any of my connections or the ESIM (Evap System Integrity Monitor) which is kind of another location I was suspecting if it wasn’t my hose connections. There is a quad ring that seals the ESIM to the EVAP canister and I had disturbed it during the pinning of the shuttle valve during the LS swap.

You can pinch off the hose coming out of the vent valve because it is normally open but I prefer to use the computer to simulate the operational sequence so I used my scanner to activate the vent valve thus closing the vent valve.

After not seeing any smoke I decided to pull the hose leaving the closed vent valve and BINGO, there’s the problem. There should not be anything passing through the vent valve.

For reference, this is the vent valve deactivated (open). I hope you can see the difference and it shows up in the pictures.

I went ahead and put a plug/cap on the outlet of the vent valve and the flow meter dropped to zero so I needed to run and grab a new vent valve from my local NAPA.

I installed the new valve and could have put everything back and run it but I’m a firm believer in trust but verify. Here’s the new valve activated closed and no smoke coming out.

Everything reconnected and ready to go.

Lastly while I had the Jeep on the lift I decided to address one of my two interference issues that I discovered during my last trip to Moab. I trimmed the pinch weld back a little more than I did 8- years ago and also trimmed, heated and reformed the inner fender splash shields.
Here you can see how much more room I have between the front of my rear tire and the inner fender. Should be plenty to allow full stuff.

My accurate measuring practice. I’m thinking about 2-3/4”. [emoji12]

Look at that, pretty accurate.

So while the Jeep was still in the shop and on the lift on Saturday morning, I thought I'd perform the third service on the LS engine as I have about 3k on the second service.

While it was on the lift I decided to rotate the tires as they have a little over 4K on them and since the front tires were off I thought I may as well address the front bumper interference issue that I experienced in Moab several weeks ago.

Taped off with the amount to remove determined. I thought I would take a bit more than needed just to ensure no rubbing issues.

Top and ends cut with a 3” cutoff wheel to keep it as clean as possible.

Amount removed ended up being about 1.5” on the top at the outer edge tapering inward and 2” at the bottom outside tapering inward to 1.5”.

I touched up the cut edge with some semi-gloss black POR-15 using a small brush.

That should be plenty of clearance as I was only catching the bottom lip of the bumper by about a half inch.

Mike....really? You did not see this in advance? You plan everything perfectly but this one slipped past you? Just kidding, I just know how detailed you are in your planning and implementation of your planning and you never saw the clearance as a possible issue. So one got by you. I love this jeep of yours and some day when you have nothing to do in Kaysville, I hope you stop by and take me for a rip in it.

Ha ha Russ. Yep, one slipped past me alright.

I actually knew I would be close based on calculations alone but I had already gone from 1.5" of bumpstop on the front to 3" and didn't want to go any more if I didn't have to so I wanted to flex it and confirm. My son merely wanted me to cut and turn the bumper into a stubby but I wanted to keep the mid-width and thought if I had to do some trimming it would be minor, which is was.

As for the rear, I cut the pinch seem slightly 8 years ago when I originally built the Jeep and went to 35's and figured I would have to go a bit more with the 37's but again, opted to test before cutting. Luckily both were relatively quick and simple fixes and now I should be interference free. However, I need another trip to verify.;)

Thanks for the comments and the harassment Russ.:D
