Topic of Discussion Cleaning up after target shooting.

I recently bought a new rifle and went out south past Saratoga to test it out only to find that almost the entire area has been closed off permanently to target shooting. After driving an extra 30 minutes and up Soldier Pass I finally got out of the “No Target Shooting” Zone only to find every decent, and some not so decent, place to shoot an absolute mess! After doing some research I come to find out that that is a large part of why West of the Lake was closed off. When did people stop caring about cleaning up after themselves and leave spent shells and shredded garbage everywhere?!?!?

This is one reason I bought a shooting gong. It's still satisfying to shoot at, as it makes a real nice sound when hit. When I'm done shooting, I throw the gong and stand in the truck, pick up my brass, and leave with no trace. No need to haul anything else too or fro from the scene of the attack. People are dirt bags.

Much of the trash we pickup at Five Mile Pass for NPLD is either shotgun shells or items that have been shot hundreds of times and absolutley shredded with bullet holes. It's sad that people don't think about their shooting.

I thought that area was off limits to shooting?

I’ve almost completely quit going to public land to shoot. I don’t like to pick up my brass, so I pay to go where I can sweep it up into a pile instead

But when we do go out on public land, I always come home with at least double or triple the stuff I went out with. It’s ridiculous.

Ya I ended up picking up what I could fit extra in my trash bag but it was so much it was pretty disheartening. I love shooting on public land but seeing what others do to it pisses me off.

Its so easy to just throw out a tarp to catch my brass and shoot steel targets. I love coming home with free friend casings too as a benefit

I shoot on a tarp, so easy to clean up. Targets are self-contained, or if they're not, they get cleaned up like I was never there. Until they closed the area, I used to go just north of Stockton, and rake up a tarpful of brass and shotgun shells, and take them to the dump on the way home. People trash public lands.

It really is disgusting how nasty shooting areas get. I hate going out to Warner Valley and seeing what looks like a dump on the hillside

A few years back during public lands day I went out just past 5 mile to a hill many people shoot at and came back with a trailer full of shot up stuff. Greg had to come looking for me because I was late getting back. Filled up a good portion of the dumpster.

The tarp is a great idea! I have always just taken a leaf rake and boxes/trash bags with me. We always come home with more than we took out but it really doesn't make a dent in the mess others have made.

Yeah, it is... but that doesn't stop the type of people that haul trash out there to shoot up and leave behind.

They expanded the no shooting area on Lake Mountain about 6 months ago, it's always been a mess with people leaving garbage behind. There is supposed to be a shooting range coming out by the Soldier pass road. If you believe everything you read...

Our club filled roll off dumpsters with shooting debris for years on BLM land. It was good PR but it was a pain to keep cleaning up the same spots over and over. The people that dump stuff are just as bad.

Out here the county dump was free, now that they charge $15 per pickup load more stuff gets dumped on public land. It's a bad cycle. I'd rather it be in the dump in the first place and subsidize the dump. I can't believe I just typed that.

Yea, I'll have JL Rockies bring me back to reality long before I start re-using a straw. (I actually used a cardboard one the other day and it was soggy on the end in about 30 seconds. It was ridiculous)

I am planning on getting one of those rolling brass catchers, and the next time I go out we will be cleaning the surrounding areas as well. I have always wanted to make some stuff out of the spent brass.

A cardboard... straw? That's kinda odd. Was it waxed or something?
