Jeep 4xE and Wagoneer release

I watched the Wagoneer part. My folks had a 91 Grand Wagoneer when i was a kid. I've always had a soft spot for them since. By far my favorite vehicle we had growing up. The concept looks fine I guess, but wasn't what I was hoping it would be. I was hoping they would modernize the look rather than such a huge departure from it. It doesn't make me want to run out and get one. Not that I could afford it. I wouldn't be surprised if they start close to $100k. I'll just have to go with plan b. Find a late 80s or early 90s Grand and make it awesome.

I think a lot of people will miss what this really means for the guy who wants to daily drive a Jeep...

For example, If I charge the battery overnight at home, I get 25 of my 38 mile commute for almost free. Because my work offers free charging for Electric Vehicles, which the Wrangler would be/is, I get another 25 miles free so of my 76+ mile daily commute I am only buying gas for 26 miles of it. If my commute is under 25 miles, I could go all electric...

I currently have a commuter car to do this drive, this new 4xE opens the door to being able to driving what I want vs. what I need to.

I don't doubt the 50 mpg either... I currently run a Ford Fusion plug in hybrid that gets 800 miles a tank of gas how I am currently using it and which works out to almost 70 mpg.

The electric option isn't there for wheeling per se but more for daily/commuter use. The cool part is that it is a plug in hybrid so when you want to run on just gas and use your rotopack for extra range you can.

Oh from a marketing stand point, the Grand Wagoneer is simply Jeeps answer to Tahoe, Navigator, Escalade, etc...

Seriously. I check every few months. There haven't been any that have tempted me too badly yet. The hipster crowd has really driven the value up on these.

Completely agree with everything you said. A 25 mile range is perfect for a vehicle like this IMO

I think this is similar to what a chevy volt did too. It might have been in the 40-50 miles range. Been a long time since I looked. Either way, it would take up most people's commute. Would be interesting to see how much range is hurt with lift/tires etc...

The big difference between the 4XE and the volt, the volt (I believe) is electric only, so you are always worried about when are you going to run out of charge (Range Anxiety), The 4XE system will simply change back over to gas when the electric charge runs out...

The Volt does have a gas engine of sorts. Not sure if it is a generator for the electric motor or if it is a hybrid type like the 4xe

This particular implementation may not turn out to be awesome, but I'm all about electric 4WD and offroad vehicles and I think this is a good step.

I wish I was smart. If I was smart, I'd be developing a modular conversion kit. A powerful and reliable electric motor to bolt up to common axle housings, with a basic control system that adapts to the existing throttle and brake pedals and accepts a wide variety of battery systems.

I'd be VERY interested a more reliable, simple beam axle mid-full size SUV. I'm NOT a big fan of the IFS/IRS SUV (and we have one). Something along the lines of "keep it simple stupid" for $30-40k with 17 or 18" wheels that was pretty capable as an SUV would get me interested. Save the 22-24" wheels for the other folks at higher trim levels and the $60-100k prices. That kind of rig would cause me to walk into a showroom. Bonus points if it has significantly more reliable/better electronics/electrical systems than the Chrysler products I've had in the past. As things stand, I'm not interested AT ALL in almost any new/newer vehicle on the market especially when you factor in the cost. A Bronco may get me to walk into a dealership but I'm not sure I'm a buyer?

It's related to other FCA products, and it shows a bit too much. I just see a scaled up fwd Cherokee. Between the insistence on the squashed 7 slot grille, and the odd wheel arch flats, it looks more like a reimagined H2 than a Wagoneer.

On Friday we ran Metal Masher with several RME friends and had a surprise guest show up, employees from Jeep driving a Wrangler 4XE plug-in hybrid on the trail. It was amazing to see and hear the new hybrid Wrangler running a challenging trail and observe how the electric motor assisted. It made an amazing sound when a decent bit of throttle was applied! It makes 470 ft lbs of torque!
