Interesting idea for EJS 2007

Simple fact is there can be no legal way to toll access to public land, roads or tolls. And I do not think there should be! Think of the snit fit we all would have if the state wanted to require a special use tag to acess national forest or BLM lands. I don't think we want to go there.

Things that could work:
1) the trash bag hand out (thanks!) and dumpsters...make it clear that an off-road group is paying for the dumpster.
2) Positive PR. Make sure all the clean-up efforts (including follow-up a week or so after the event) are well documented in the loacl media.
3) Well writen, fact based and attack free letters to the editor.

None of it too hard and added on to the efforts already underway will help public preception alot.

ok here is how i look at it. we, us, the actual people who off-road down there, are pretty responsibl for the most part, its the spring brekers that sit at potato salad and dump bump that are giving EJS a bad rap......for the most part!!

ok so us the off-roaders we are already in the lime light for being destructive and littering right? well since the attention is all on us why dont we do something to change it......i like all the ideas about picking up trash and donating 10 $ i personaly would do both..then we just might get recognised for doing something productive and actualy caring. i guess i am trying to say that it is all on us to do what ever we can do to keep these trails open because the spring breakers are sure as hell not going to do anyhting, if it gets closed down they will just go where ever the party is next year. and ya i know i dont have an answer as of what to do but i do know that something has to be done and it has to be done by us. AND VERY SOON!!!!

now as for the extra law enforcement down there, have you seen how much they already bring in. they have helicopters, a porable station, ande riot control!!! you just cant bring in any more, also another reson why we have to do our part and the part of others...in picking up trash is because the cops down there durring that time have a lot of other and more important issues to deal with.

but a toll both is not the answer, the town already makes tons of money durring that week..with jacked up prices on everything from a hotel room to a JBC at wendys. if we want to contribute money it should be through a organisation like mud fund or something so we know or money is not going to buy the adults a drink and the boys a rootbeer.

i know that this club will pull through and come up with something.......so what ever it is. i fully support it already

I agree, but I think it shouldn't only be local media, but as wide spread as possible. I think locally Moab knows that the general 4x4 community does not thrash their home. Granted, I haven't spoken to every Moab resident, but I would think generally they all feel this way already, making it nearly a wasted effort (to keep the media local).

I read all of this talk about charging a toll to be in Moab for the week... definately not legal and not enforceable.

I wish everybody could just vouluntarily hand that $10 (or more) over at the RR4W booth. I know I will be. ;)

X3. good summary.
4) speak up when you see people off trails.
5) monetary donations to usa all, mud fund, or RR4W.

I think we are at a point where there is a general accord of things to do. I really would like to see dumpsters at a couple of key areas. Area BFE, Dump bump and Salad.

I think that we also need to remember that the mission of the BLM is to manage public land. That is make it available for the most users possible. This would include preservation of historical and natural beauty while at the same time allowing for recreation. I learned a lot when I spent a weekend camping with the moab area BLM with my graduating class during my senior year of college.

One of the guys I graduated with also took a job from the BLM. I am composing an email to find out what they would like to see us do. I'll let you know the response.

I think that is has been decided that a toll is not going to happen, nor necessarily a good idea. But what we should focus on now is the best (and easiest) way for people to donate to the MUD fund, or whatever organization they feel will help keep our trails open. Hell, donate $10 (or more) to RR4W, USA-ALL and U4WDA. I would think $30 a year to be a reasonable amount that we could all afford, and it will help keep our sport going.

Ok, what ideas do we have for setting up an easy way to donate to the mud fund?

It's easy to write a check to RR4W and mail it to them: P.O. Box 1471 Moab, UT 84532-1471. Their website says that they accept donations from clubs and groups. I bet RME could raise a ton of money as a donation to RR4W if someone decided to do that.

You can buy their "Mud Fund" pins and other merchandise at the office during EJS also. Go down to the arena south of town.

Who wants to setup a donation event type thingy for RR4W or the mud fund? I see everyone saying they will or want to, so....someone make it happen. :greg:

what if we, the responsible off-roaders(excluding Meat and Badger of coarse ;)**EDIT - and now BRETT for calling me 'gross' j/k) exploit the offending drunks that litter and abuse our land in and around EJW... in the new papers, 4x4 rags, tv programs, letters to the editor, even 4x4 videos, anything... are we not allowed to complain about some of the same damn things the greenies do?

instead of saying who you will donate to... list who you have donated to... wouldn't it be nice if donating to keep our sport open was the 'cool thing to do'?

i've got just under $200 in U4WDA, USA-ALL, and Blue Ribbon collectively in the 7 months i've been home... i'm no better than anyone here because of it... just trying to start a 'cool' trend.. ;)

First, I can not even imagine what the "greenies" would do with that if they could get a Toll put on trails and such. $100.00 to run a trail per vehicle.....

Second, The "Moab Toll" is nothing more than a Tax and I will not support a tax of any kind.

Third, as was said before by Bart, who is going to monitor the moneys collected and who gets the money?

Forth, Were is the pay-pal account for this??? I don't write checks. I paid Greg online, I paid U4WDA online, I paid USA-ALL online (gold member), lets make this simple so none of us has any excuses. I hate writing checks and mailing things out. That is so old fashion.
How many of you will bother to write a check???
How many of you would do it if it was much faster and easier online?
I want to know that my money is going straight into the hands of the people who will use it for what I am donating it for, not Beer, Rootbeer, and T-shirts.

Lastly, PSH has to be the single greatest source of the ROUDY, drunkin, stupid, litering bad rep we "off-roaders" get. It used to be at Dump bump too, but now that is quite and clean. People don't want to pay $10.00 a head to go throught the gate to watch when there aren't many rigs there playing. I am not sure if I am suggesting that they close down PSH or not, but would some of that bad rep go away if they did? Would all the college kids go away (not go to Moab anymore)? Or would they just hit the trails and spread their beer cans all over the trails instead of at PSH?
What happened to the plan to move EJS away from spring break to help keep the college kids from coming down?

I thought we already decdied that a toll was a bad thing, and not even legally do-able anyways.

And I am all about PayPal, the easier it is, the more people will donate. Although their are the pros to checks, PayPal doesn't take any percentage of those, so ALL the money actually goes where you wanted it.

Check past threads about the dates, and I dont think that many of those party kids even go to college, so dates may not matter.

And I think PSH is actually a good thing to keep the rowdys in one spot, rather than all over the trails. But giving them more bad publicity will only affect us negatively. No matter how much we say they are not a part of our group, people will not realize the difference, especially the tree huggers. It will just give them more ammo. I say the more quiet the better.

All academic at this point... ;)

Tolls & Special Fees: Been up AF Canyon lately? Mirror Lake? How about closer to Moab... Sand Flats Rec. Area, Canyonlands, Arches? They all charge a special use fee that is supposed to be used EXACTLY as such. In American Fork Canyon that fee has been used to build restrooms, campgrounds, road construction & improvements, etc. Hard to say what the canyon would be like if the money wasn't there. They charge everyone the same $3, wether your driving up the canyon for a picnic, driving through to Heber, or have a trailer full of ATV's.

Would it work in Moab? Its obviously working all around Moab, include the afforementioned Sand Flats area (Hells, Porcupine, Fins, Lasal Loop, etc). It is way beyond the scope of a forum, regardless of the size. That would be something for the Moab locals to decide and it wouldn't/couldn't be placed on 191, but mabey Kane Creek, Potash Rd... That alone would snag a bunch of the trails. PSH could have a "fee" booth too. Its all besides the point... we just need people to get involved in the land use scene outside the academic world ;) talk is cheap...

Well, here you go.

You can become a supporting member of RR4W ($25.00) online at this addy. This goes straight into the MUD fund.

http://www.rr4w.com/supportmembership.html

Or, you can drop a check in the mail (for any amount) to RR4W at the address on the homepage listed above. If you don't want to look it up, it's
RR4W
PO Box 1471
Moab, UT 84532-1471

Or, if you're in Moab during Safari, you can drop by the arena during the day and donate at the EJS desk.

i agree PSH should remain the main spot where the rowdies play.. keeps em in one spot... but i hardly think that if we called them out on thier destructive activities through media, it'd be that big of a negative mark against off-roaders in general...

Caught this one a bit late...

All I'm going to say is: It's too bad the ones with closed minds are also the ones with open mouths.

I want to help, but don't quite know where to start. If it means joining every 4x4 club in Utah then sign me up. I'll do what I can to help.

Considering how painless it would be to lose access in Moab, writing a check should sound pretty good.

I still think it would be awesome for an RME'er to organize a donation drive for RR4W and the MUD FUND. They could setup a paypal account for this purpose, and I'm sure RME could raise a nice chunk of money.

Everyone can donate to RR4W through U4WDA's donation page. Use the paypal buttons at the bottom and put "RR4W MUD FUND" in the comment box. 100% of the money will be sent to RR4W. So there you go. Quick and painless way to donate via paypal. Donate away! Let's help RR4W keep Moab open!
