alright thanks man,

but i know very little about cars, just the basics, my dad knows more, so can i ask you to explain how you can get maybe some 25-28 tires withought a body lift, cause i mostly just want the body lift for tire clearance, so how do i get bigger tires without lifting it?

as for the lockers, what do you mean exactly by the welding, and the 3rd tire thing?

my friends dad is a wielder so im sure i could get him to help me out there, sense we dont have a welding kit

You do have tons of questions.. :)

25- 28 inch tires? it should already have something that size on it.. you are looking to do more like 31's - 33's (or some metric equivalent).. and to fit bigger tires without lift means cutting the body to fit them + bump stops (normally)..

Do a search on here for Lincon Locker for a good explanation of welding up the spider gears for a locker.. The 3rd tire thing is in reference to open differentials really only being 1 wheel with power (usually the wheel that has no traction).. so with 2 axles with open diffs being in 4wd is kinda like having 2 wheels with power.. if you weld up the spider gears or any other locker on 1 axle you end up with 3 wheel drive (also search lockers)..

Take some time and read some of the different build threads on here and you will start getting more information than you ever wanted to know :)

Question 1: Body lift vs. susp. lift. You see that obstacle in the way on the trail? Your body lift will NOT help you get over it. A suspension lift WILL help you from high-centering, etc.

Question 2: Welding the rear-end means that both back tires will produce forward movement... permanently. There is no undo button here. Even if one of the back tires is off the ground. Hence, what he was saying about 3-wheel driving is that when you have it in 4-wheel-drive, both back tires AND --one-- front tire will produce forward movement.

Clear as mud?

this is why everyone is steering you away from the rodeo 33"s will be a pain in the a** and thats about the smallest tire for wheeling the rodeo body will need lots of cutting to fit larger tires without a lift and a lift is gonna run you upwards of $3000 and it still wont perform like a stock tj, yj, samuarai, xj, or toyota pick up. there is a reason these are the most popular vehichles. not to mention finding aftermarket parts for a rodeo will be hard. where the other vehicles have thousands of dealers offering anything you can imagine

alright, i think i get the locker thing

so like, say you have it on your rear tires, and your right rear tire comes off the ground, it transfers the power into the left tire still in the ground, correct?

Both tires will spin at the same time. So, your tire in the air will move the same turns as the tire on the ground.

which would you recommend more? a jeep or a toyota, i dont really want a jeep mostly because everyone has one, and they are too mainstream, i want to be a bit different. lol

and i dont really like 4 runners,

is this a good deal?

I wheel a standard cab Tacoma (not lifted and no locker) and it's a great vehicle. That's not a bad price for a '99. The overhang in the back is a bit longer than most people here like but with the lift that should solve a lot of the problem.

I'm not saying a Tacoma is the cat's meow but what do you mean "very limited performance"? -_-

Shhh! Words like that have been known to insight riots! :ugh:

I'm a Toyota guy so this is my bias opinion but depending on your budget you should really look into the Tacoma's with the TRD package or the 96 and newer 4runner. You will pay a bit, but they have a great IFS front end with rack and pinion steering that is actually worth putting money into, some came with a selectable rear locker (on/off), large factory tires, they're incredibly reliable and have a ton of aftermarket support. A bone stock TRD is not an extreme rockcrawler by any means but it will handle almost anything you will ever want to throw at it--and then some.

If I were to be 17 again, I'd get a cheap single cab Pickup/Tacoma, manual hubs, I4, 5sp. Lift it 2-3", 32's and just have lots of fun with it.

I've had both Jeeps and Toyotas and IMO, Toyotas are just better made. They might be a little more expensive, but also realize you will get most, if not all of that back if you decide to sell it.

There are hundreds of people out there that will give you hundreds of different opinions on what 4x4 will suit you best. Getting involved in the sport may be one of the best things you can do. Meet up with a local club or with some people here for a trail ride and see what you like and don't like about other people's 4x4's. Are you in the SLC area? There's almost always a group (depending on the time of year) headed out to the snakes, AFC, West Desert etc. on the weekends and most would be more than happy to give you advice and tips. Take the Ranger and your old man and just hang out, bs and take pictures and get an idea of what you want and go from there.
