one step forward 2 steps back is what it seems.
i finnaly got around to tearing apart my front diff to find out whats wrong. it seems that the spider gears have failed and so have the ring and pinion. but on the bright side.....i machined down the cv axle bolts so when i do break a cv i will not have to remove anything other than the hubs to undo the clip and the bolts that hold it to the diff, IF YOU HAVENT DONE THIS ALREADY I WOULD MAKE IT YOUR NEXT TO DO ON YOUR IFS TOYOTA.
i dont know what your talking about i can get them out just fine with out machining the bolts?

I think anybody who can drop that front diff or change a CV without a) replacing those studs with bolts or b) popping the upper ball joint to shift the spindle out, has made a deal with the devil and is using witchcraft. The first time I dropped my front diff was an all-day affair because I kept believing the FSM that the CVs should compress outboard enough to clear those studs.

I have always just popped the studs out one at a time with a pry bar while everything is still in the truck, then drop the CV out. When assembling, put the studs in (you can feel when they are "set" back into the knurl grooves) and tighten the nut. No need to bother machining. Maybe I am just lucky, but I have had it work several times on many different trucks.

mine took some persuading to get out. the truck is pretty rusty. reason for machining is only to make life easy on the trail or quick change at a race. you can file, sand, machine, grind or whatever you want to do. it just makes life easy imo

tomorrow's agenda.
install new diff and tie rod ends
pack up and leave for sema.

Never owned a Toyota but from the pictures it does really make sense to replace those studs with bolts just for ease of removal. Maybe if I had tried to take one out I'd understand more or maybe I'd be lucky and be able to work this "magic" Kevin and Seth speak of but anything that is still as strong and makes it easier makes sense to me.

Anyway, truck looks much better after you have done some minor work to the exterior and good lord that cage was scary looking so thank you for making the cage removal/replacement a priority. Looking forward to see where this goes.

its been a while since i have done anything real to it. i have finally decided what i wanna do for a color scheme, saftey yellow and black racing stripes to help me go fast. on the down side i am still trying to find a front diff for this thing, no luck on the 4:30 diff.

here she is yellow with no stripes yet.

I had a hell of a time finding a 4.30 diff a few years ago, not even the junkyards had one. I ended up buying a used ring and pinion from a guy in Arizona and regearing a 4.10 chunk.

go to 4;10s, if its anything like my old ifs truck you are going to break the front diff every weekend... use the cheapest and easiest parts you can find. if you want to get custom, look at ford expedition front ifs. if i had kept wheeling my old ifs truck my plan was to swap ford stuff in. ive heard good things about it

if u want to do the supra rear end swap with a 4.30 diff with a factory lsd, ive got one. seen a few guys on pirate squeeze it into the front pickup ifs, and its a 8" v6 geared diff.

i think i am actually gonna ditch the 7.5" and custom mount a 8" third member from a lexus rear end. they use a drop out toyota third with a limited slip and looks like the cv axle paterns are similar.

I've heard of using an old Supra rear end for that. I daydreamed about cutting up a front housing to match the width of the IFS diff and tube and having custom halfaxles built, but that's way beyond my fab skills.
