If they do make a truck with a diesel and the nukizer front clip I will be camped out at the dealership waiting for the first one off the truck. However jeep likes to tease us with awesomeness then let us down.
Just to fill your mind with more good ideas, my friend has a 97 CC PSD, with axles and suspension from a 2008 super duty. It rides like a dream, couldn't be that hard to do on a van....
That's the Maverik in my hood! Needless to say anyone who has been watching roadkill has had the same thoughts. How bout a supercharger on the v6 until it blows up? At least give us a burn out video with the little tires before you swap them out?
Fordyce is a tough and awesome trail, the Stranger Danger Ranger didn't get to go, and the Dude Magnet stayed in camp. Ill work on getting the picture up in the next day or two.
An XJ set up right could do better than 15 mpg and still be a capable wheeler. Mine with a manual transmission 4.56s and 33 10.50s would get near 20 mpg running between 70-75 mph. You should be able to get a pretty nice one within your budget. Just my 2 cents.
You could run from one end to the other in a day with a couple of decent rigs. However it really is worth taking your time. We were on the trail for three days to run from Tahoe to loon lake and back. Next time I would like to take four days.
