I'm going to drop back a week.

I have too much other exercise going on, I have a 1/2 marathon this weekend and Zion Ragnar the weekend after, I need to focus on that more for the time being.

But I do think dropping back a week would be a good idea.

Week 4 Day 1: 12-14-11-10-16
Week 4 Day 2: 14-16-12-12-18
Week 4 Day 3: 16-18-13-13-23

Week 5 day 1: 28-35-25-22-36
Week 5 day 1: 18-18-20-20-14-14-16-40

This is getting insane. I was supposed to do my 8 sets 45 sec apart, but there's no way. It took me 30 min to do all 8 sets, but I did each set without interruption. It took me 10 minutes to rest enough to be able to do the last set of 40. But hey, I did 40, and that's double what I started with. 160 pushups total tonight. I never thought I'd be able to do this many in one night.

I agree with dave; there's no way I'll be ready to do 100 consecutive in a week and a half. Maybe I could do two sets of 50, but I doubt I could do 100 in a row. I'm also finding that the third set is easier to do than the first one. I need about 20 pushups to get warmed up before I get in the zone. Doing 100 right off the bat is going to be tough.

Every single time I go to do pushups, I look at what the schedule calls for and I think "no way in hell will I do that". And then I do it. Well, five out of six times I do it, anyway, and I've been fighting a nasty nasty cold for almost two weeks now that I've been doing my best not to whine about so I'm not going to beat myself up over the workouts I bonked. I'm supposed to do pushups tonight, 10-12-9-9-13 or something like that. It's going to hurt, and knowing what a struggle I had to finish my reps last time, it's hard not to be skeptical that I'll complete this one. But I've been skeptical every time, and I've surprised myself almost every time. So even though the program looks impossible to complete in the original timeframe, I'm going to keep plugging away, and I'm not going to be afraid to redo a week or drop to an easier bracket or whatever, as long as I'm still trying. I really really want to do one hundred pushups.

Kevin, i got 4 total last night, i am a wimp, i try to get serious after the week end..

You're a stud. You're money. You're so money you don't even know it.

edit - 10-12-9-9 ... 8. So much for surprising myself.

Whew...

Week 6 is an ass kicker.

Day 1 and I got:

45-54-35-30-58 222 total

The two in bold... That second set was supposed to be 55 but I couldn't do the last one. And the last set, I rested a full 10 minutes before I tried it. As far as that goes, I rested two whole minutes between the other sets too. That first set was easy. But every one after that, I just barely, barely, shaking like a dog shitting a peach pit was able to complete.

So... Pretty much cheated my way through today. Rested way longer than I'm supposed to and still didn't quite get that second set done. And I'm feeling it right now like I have not felt it since I started this.

We'll see how Day 2 goes. But I'm thinking I'm going to end up doing this week over again. Maybe even dropping back a column. Today was just brutal for me.

nice job dave. I was out of town on Friday, so I missed my sets, gotta get back on the horse today. These pushups have been giving me more energy for my extracurricular activities, and I definitely have more strength than when I started the challenge.

Ahhh to be young again! These pushups are sucking the energy right out of me!

And, I really am not feeling stronger. I actually "feel" weaker, beleive it or not. I bet if I was trying to do some heavy bench presses, my max. would be going down like the Titanic right now. I can see by the numbers that my endurance for doing pushups is increasing. But not without cost - I don't think I can lift as much at one time - one rep max - as I could before I started this. One rep max is how I've always measured useful strength. Hence, I feel weaker.

And sore -_-.

I'm going to stick with it though. 100 pushups or bust!

Week 2 Day 2 kicked my butt last week so I took a longer break. I'll be repeating week 2 this week, hopefully I've rested enough to get through the whole thing.

Week 6: 40-50-25-25-50

I cheated on the sets of 50. I had to squat like a frog for 15-30 seconds to catch my breath before finishing my set. I'm super exhausted around 40 and getting to 50 just isn't possible at the moment. I can't imagine ever being able to do 100 in a row without a break.

Week 6, Day 3 - complete

26-26-33-33-26-26-22-22-72-15

301 pushups total.

So, for whatever reason, but I think it's just because the sets, while numerous, are smaller, days 2 and 3 of week 6 were a lot easier for me than day 1 was. Today, the first 8 sets, I did with less than 60 seconds rest between sets and even the last one wasn't really super hard. Basically no struggle through that first 8 sets. But the 9th set, that "72", I rested a good solid 10 minutes before I tried it. Got up, walked around, drank some water, sat at the computer etc. before I started it. But, still, I'm feeling pretty good about being able to do 72 good pushups just 10 minutes after doing that first 8 sets. Then I added up the total, which was 286, and deciced to do one more set of 15 just to be able to say I did 300 pushups this morning (which, literally, I will probably never do again...).

Anyway... I'll wait a few days and see how many I can do now.

I just stumbled across this thread and I'll have to say, great job to all of you for taking on this challenge.

I've been involved with Precisionnutrition.com for a couple of years and have learned much about strength training and eating the right foods to stay lean and maintain a healthy lifestyle. It's been an amazing transformation for me, which everyone, regardless of age or girth, can benefit from. I'm finalist#8 out of approx 400 http://www.precisionnutrition.com/finalists-men-jan-2013

I'm in currently in the middle of a self-imposed 90 day challenge to conquer the muscle-up exercise, inspired by the amazing Frank Medrano. He focuses on body weight conditioning using calisthenics, check this out if you're ready to move to the next level........

nice job dave. If you can do 72 after that many sets, I don't see 100 being too far off.

Thanks. And yes, for the first time since starting this, I now feel like 100 is definitely within reach. I may not get it the first try, but I'm now 100% confident that I'll get there.

Something else different about this week, might be worth mentioning, I pulled or strained something in my leg last weekend (showing my daughter how to ride wheelies on her new bike...). So I've not done ANY of my usual exercise or 4 mile walks that I normally do every day as a major part of my pain management strategy. That equates to nearly 2 hours of exercise and activity I normally do most days, that I have not done at all this week.

Thinking maybe by resting from everything else, I really put some coin in the energy/strength bank to spend on the pushups. Maybe?
