Toyota 2nd Gen 4runner lift options

OK. I just scored a 91' 4Runner from a relative (free) and now Ive got some questions. First I need some suspension clearance. I knew I had IFS and coils up front, but I had no idea before I looked down there that the rear had coils as well - I was expecting leaf springs. I'd just like to know what others have done or know of doing in regards to lifting this thing. How hard is it to do a solid axyl swap up front? Can I and should I put leaves in the rear or just space the coils for some height?

Some people supposedly use longer coils from an FZJ80 to replace the rear 4Runner coils for some lift (not sure how much).
Toytec has some pretty inexpensive spacers for a 2" lift.

More substantial IFS lifts are a waste of money IMO unless you do a long travel kit like Total Chaos. But for around the same price you could SAS it and be better off.

It all totally depends on what your planned use and budget are.

thanks. i like the SAS route best for up front anyway. As for the rear (im not familliar with land cruizers) do you take the front springs of of the FZJ80 and put them on the rear of the 4runner or does the FZ have rear coils too?
My other option if feasible is to go with leaf springs in the rear. If anyone has done that, I could use some ideas.

-IF you want to keep the IFS; (2" ToyTec Lift-$299)

-If you want to do a front SAS; (leaf sprung kits)

Option #1- Full kit- (Sky's Manufacturing- $1290) (everything you'd need)

Option #2- "Half" Kit- (Sky's Manu.- $179) (supply some parts)

You could always spend some dough and do a 3 or 4-link'd coilover system... (you could always save some money and use coils instead of coilovers)
(now I would reccomend this company, but they recently went out of business due to the economy, but you could always do a similar design)
-Offroad Solutions Toyota Coilover System- (As I found while reading May 2008's issue of Peterson's 4-Wheel Drive & Offroad magazine. (pages 78-80 :D))
http://www.offroadsolutions.com/suspension.html#7995_coilover

-To check out pics of this install as done by Peterson's magazine (done on a '00 Tacoma, but the Offroad Solutions link I posted above would have been the kit you'd order)

----------------------REAR---------------------
Option #1- Do a longarm multi-link kit and keep the coil design and use lift coils. (best flex, smoothest ride) (I'd reccomend BallisticFab's link joints as found here)
http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/Forged-Chromolly-263quot-Ballistic-Joint_p_1636.html
---OR--- Support your local economy and go down to SummitMachine in Draper
http://www.summitmachine.com/index.php?p=customParts&cp=fj
-And then you will obviously need new brackets to mount your links to your axle and frame;
http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/Brackets-and-Tabs_c_11.html

Option #2- Do a leaf conversion (may be slightly cheaper than doing a nice multi link setup, however it will be a stiffer ride/less flex)
-Some leaf spring swap brackets (if you scroll down half-page there are more hangers and stuff that you would need to complete this)

*As far as I know and have researched, noone makes a '92 4-runner rear leaf spring conversion "kit" for your vehicle specific application, so some tricky fab may be required. (all of these links except the ToyTec 2" IFS lift would require some sort of fab)

*Check out this '93 1ton 4-runner Utah build w/ a SAS. (He kept the rear coils and did a long-arm 4link)

*Check out Lewis' 1ton SAS on his double-cab Tacoma.. It would be pretty much the same deal for the front)

Hope I may have helped with some ideas! ... It's what I'm here for!
