3 wheeler spark problem (84 yamaha)

A buddy of mine gave me a 225dx 3wheeler, and I have the typical carb cleaning done, and I have got it to idle for about 2 seconds and then it dies. The problem is that I'm tired of pulling on the rope, and I get no spark to the plug when the engine is turned over with the e-start. (yes, bright beautiful spark from the plug while pulling the rope, but nada with electric start)
Can anyone tell me why this is?:-\ I'm stumped!
