6.0 powerstroke rebuild.

A little update. Pulled the trailer a few more times without issues. Then headed to Oregon the P0478 came back. Cleared it and it made the return trip without a hiccup.
Pulling to Yost this past weekend it came back. The truck is also getting some power surges and it over boosting (30+ psi) when pulling hills. I'm going to try cleaning the EBP tube that runs from the manifold to the sensor and see what that does. I also need to clean the MAF as it used the EBP, MAP and MAF to determine boost and operate the VGT vanes. It's possible the MAF is dirty and skewing the numbers.
I know the turbo on this truck is probably not the one it went to Wasatch Diesel with and it definitely has some shaft play. I have been looking at a KC turbo's stage one and possibly upgrading to slightly larger injectors too. Power Driven Diesel in Cedar has some pretty good success getting the 6.0 with those upgrades and some tuning into the high 400hp range to the wheels. That is 6.7 power for less than the sales tax on a used 6.7.
You'll want to upgrade your transmission if you are thinking of hitting those kinds of power numbers. I assume it's an automatic, the 5r110 doesn't like the kind of power it takes to push 400 to the wheels, inside might become outside pretty fast. They are rated for 1100lbft input post torque converter and I think the one you have is somewhere in the 1.4-1.6 range so you can kill that trans without much upgrading to the engine.

I have decided this truck just doesn't like Wendover, can you blame it . Headed out to the Sage Riders race at the knolls Friday and it popped the intercooler boot off, that's twice in the last year. I really need to dig into it now. I tried to clean the EPB sensor tube but it was seized onto the exhaust manifold and I didn't want to break it. I'll check that and the MAP sensor this week. If none of those are a smoking gun I'll pull the turbo and check the VGT solenoid and the unison ring.
Still not to upset this engine has gone 40K miles with the only issues being things that got put back onto it during the rebuild and should be expected of a 180k mile truck. Even if I have to dump a couple grand into it this year, that isn't even the sales extortion on a newer one.

In my experience sick litres pop boots really easy if there is any trace of oil on the boot or hose. I always saturate a shop rag with a shot of brake lean, wipe down the inside of the boot and outside of the hose before clamping back together. I do this on new and old boots, haven't popped one off since adopting this practice 5 years ago.

Cleaned the piss out of it, carb cleaner on a rag and used some purple scothbrite on the tubes. Inside and out was clean and dry.

Popped off in a couple miles on the road with no load under medium throttle.
I dataloged a bit and will see what my map, EBP and MAF are reading. I'm going to pull the turbo tomorrow and see if the unison ring is rusted or groved.

Man popping boots off sucks I’m sorry. I’m lucky my 7.3 hasn’t done it yet but they’re famous for doing it at the most inopportune time.

From everything I’ve ever heard is cleaning it really well (like you did) and coating them in hairspray does the trick…. I never wanted to deal with the mess and I’m still unsure about it. Something to look into anyway.

Pretty sure the RiffRaff boots require their clamps as well if you don’t already have them.

I checked my data logs and the EPB is functioning correctly which eliminates the new sensor and the tube to it being clogged. So I pulled the turbo and boom, stuck unision ring. The whole thing looks really clean soot wise, but the housing is rusted and has locked the unison ring.

So now it's decision time. Rebuild this one or go KC stage 1. I'm leaning heavily to the upgrade but I haven't ran the numbers to see how much the rebuild will be. If its more than $500, I'm going with the better turbo.

Is there an option to choose a more reliable or more responsive smaller turbo? I'd be worried about breaking something else if you add boost.
The KC stage one is essentially a better spooling stock turbo with better internals. Not really adding more boost. However, I did put O-ringed heads in this motor when I rebuilt it, plus it got all brand new ford bottom end and completely new valve train. So it should hold way more hp than a stock motor.

Got the new turbo installed, the flat tire fixed and the batteries charged and it's running great. It seems to spool much quicker than the OEM turbo. It does have a distinct and noticable whistle at low rpm with moderate throttle. We'll test it towing the jeep to Moab for EJS next week.

Went to hook up to the trailer to load the jeep for EJS, dead batteries AGAIN. These Costco interstates have gone down hill. These are 8/2020.
So two new super start premiums from Orielley's and we are back in business. Turns over so fast now🤣.
Pulled the jeep on my 16ft trailer with approximately 1k pounds of shit my wife packs every year. Got to Moab this afternoon with zero drama and 15% better fuel mileage than it's ever done. Didn't notice any difference in pulling other than it spools WAY faster and takes off from a stop much quicker than with the OEM turbo. Glad to have spent half the sales tax for a new truck to keeping this one going and the dreaded thread alive.

I’ve had terrible luck with every Interstate battery I’ve owned.
