Canyons last weekend

Got out with a group of friends to explore some canyons down around North Wash and Poison Springs last weekend. Good times!

Pictures...

First up was Seven Mile canyon, which empties into Lake Powell, where I did my first ever real canyon rappels (4 of them in this canyon).

Next day was Leprechaun, the east/right fork. The rappel here was way easier than any of the ones in Seven Mile.

That night we drove down Poison Springs and most of the way out on the Black Jump road to camp, before hiking Happy Canyon the next day.

Tons of petrified wood in this area. What looks like a small ledge in this picture below is actually a big petrified log.

Last day, we took our time driving out Poison Springs, stopping to look at the many interesting sights along the way.

YES!!! To put it mildly .

And a huge THANK YOU to you and Davy for making it possible. Without you guys making the effort to allow me to get a little feel for it and take that first step, I wouldn't have had the confidence to make this first real attempt. You guys ROCK, and I am grateful!

But, yeah, I am soooooo hooked! Haven't bought my own gear yet, but I do know what I'm going to get and will have it before I go again. The guys I went with on this trip are super experienced, there was over 80 years of canyoneering experience between them. They let me try several types of descenders and stuff and I think I have a better idea of what will work for me now. Which is good. I almost bought a harness and an ATC before this trip. But now I want a different harness (BD Bod) and a Piranha instead. Two reasons for the Piranha over the ATC being, speed - the ATC is just painful slow it seems like, and more importantly, I really like being able to leave the Piranha attached to the harness while clipping in. If anybody can find a way to drop and lose his ATC or figure 8 at the top of a rappel, that would be me . Plus, I actually had reason to use the tie off feature of the Piranha on a rappel to free both my hands and I liked that too (took my boots off and chucked them clear of a pool before dropping into it and getting wet).

I just regret not starting this 30 years ago!

Great images, Alex shared some similar shots with me yesterday. Our family bought climbing gear for Christmas last and we've climbed a bit around St George, but I want to do more canyoneering trips. Hope to replicate this trip in the near future........
