Has anyone here ever cut their axle splines to make them fit into a shorter housing? I only need about 1/2" to come off. Any thoughts on this?

Yep. As long as you have enough spline to engage, and it doesn't mess up the location of any seal surface (if it's a front), then cut away! Use an abrasive cutter like a chopsaw, it'll eat the teeth of a bandsaw.

There are quite a few "universal" shafts that are designed to be cut-to-fit.

ive cut a t-case input shaft down with a chop saw, and sent to moser to have necked down and resplined.. for a custom built doubler I built. ive also cut down stub and inner shafts to fit different hubs or housings when there is plenty of spline surface.
