hey guys i have some questions about my cummins i just bought

its a 96 club cab long bed 4x4 cummins automatic. 285,000 miles i got for 3000 dollars from the original owner. its runs great and the tranny has been rebuilt 3 times. its fully loaded so i feel i got a fairly decent deal.

so my questions. i want a leveling kit which ones are the best. i see them on ebay for about 100 bucks but they are metal and i was told metal suck for suspension and the poly ones are better but i have only see those on newer trucks.


also what automatic tranny does this thing have i know its a bad tranny and i want to know what kind it is and what i can do to help it.

also i think i want to drop a whole new tranny in it, but i want to do a 6-speed manual ( if that is possible fairly easy in this truck) or something aftermarket like an ATS tranny ( i heard those are good)


any help is appreciated.

also i want to do exhaust if any of you have thoughts on that and i want to take the o-ring out of the turbo if anyone knows how to do that.

It sounds like you got a very good deal, congrats.

For a leveling spacer, I've heard that the metal spacers can sometimes make a little noise, but I know people with both the poly and steel spacers with no complaints. Just make sure you get the 4wd spacers, and not the 2wd spacers, they are different. Also check into just getting 2"-2.5" coils from Skyjacker, they might be about the same price.

Your stock trans is not a "bad trans", it's just fine if the engine is kept stock, if it's well maintained, and if it's not overloaded or abused. But there is certainly room for improvement. What you have is a 47RH (aka: 618). Several good companies build sronger autos:

Although it'll probably cost more, and is certainly more work, you can upgrade to a 5 speed (NV4500) or a 6 speed (NV5600). http://www.quad4x4.com/NV5600.htm no longer sells the NV5600, but I'm sure they can help you get everything else you might need. Also check here http://www.drivetrain.com/nv5600.html. Don't forget you'll need a PCM from a '96 CTD with a manual trans.

For an exhaust, I can't recommend any particular one, but get a 4" system.

I have the Pro Comp leveling kit on mine. The spacers are powder coated aluminum. As for the exhaust, I got mine off of Ebay, 4 inch turbo back, cost about 400 bucks shipped. As far as the o-ring in the turbo question, I'm not sure what you are talking about on that one...But there is a silencing ring on the intake side of the turbo you can remove. No performance gain, just more turbo noise! Also, if you are going to do exhaust, do a high flow intake too. Try to move as much air throught the engine as possible, keeps the exhaust temps down.

Dont worry about the 6in, you dont need it unless your making over 500HP. i say save your money and just stright pipe it and then save up some cash for a Fuel Plate, Thats where you can make some serious power in those 12 valves..

HAHAHA the fuel plate is where all the power is is the old 12 valves. It is a plate that you replace, controls how much fuel your motor gets. Witch in turn makes more power.I cant realy explain it any better than that. If someone else can explain it better, go for it..

sounds like your saying the fuel pump/regulator when your turn them up so it allows more fuel

Its not the fuel pump that hes talking about. The fuel plate is diferent. You can get gobs of power out of those 12v for pretty cheap. The only downside is, is thats its not adjustable from in cab like on Computer controlled diesels. So if you want less power you have to get under the hood. You can also adjust the injector timing and a bunch of other little things to get more power or efficiency out of them. Like someone else said, that 6" exhaust would be a waste, just find a good 4".

Im going with a 4" exhaust and 4" downpipe on my PSD from Magnaflow.

I would avoid Banks just because theyre so expensive for what you're getting. You can get just as much or more power out of peicing components together from other manufacturers. But if you have the cash to blow and just want to do it all in one sitting then i guess go with Banks.

Do a search on Ebay for Cummins Fuel Plate, and then compare it to what Banks wants.

I would go and talk to Zane at Wide Open Performance - they're around 8500 South Sandy Parkway in Sandy (just west of I-15 and north of 90th South. I've dealt with Gillette and Wide Open and the difference for me was night and day - Price, Customer Service, Quality of Work - all way better at Wide Open. Yes down there I WOULD use Gillette. Talk to them about all that was talked about here. They can help you out.
