Educate me on dana 60s

Can somebody give me a little education on dana 60s? Or point me to a good source so that I can read for myself? It seems that d60s axle came on lots of different vehicles and from different manufacturers. Is there a particular year/make model of vehicle that most people try to use when locating/building a d60 for a buggy? Are the dimensions for the d60 the same regardless of manufacturer?
