I know almost nothing regarding 120V(110...whatever) wiring. What I need to do is put an outlet in my in-laws house. I have both a light switch and a light on the back side of the wall that I need the outlet (backside is unfinished right now). Can I pull off of either the light switch or the light? Is this frowned on or is this acceptable? Worse case, I can pull a new line from the breaker box but if I don't have to I'd rather not pull a line for one outlet.
Electricians...or anyone else that wants to voice their opinion

Depends on how much of a load is on that breaker. You should be fine to pull an extra outlet in most cases. No expert here but have done quite a bit of wiring.
