Extending atlas shifters? What material to use?

I'm wanting to extend my atlas shifters. I basically want to cut the welds and take them out of the pivot blocks and make new longer ones. Has anybody on here done this? If so what kind of steel did you use? Regular 1/2" round bar or is it some kind of hardened steel? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Calvin

If you wanted to go with a better material you can get 4130 chromoly for basically the same price on onlinemetals.com, and you can order only exactly how much you need.
Chromoly it quite a big stronger and yields much higher, so it's less likely to permanently bend. It's easily TIG welded too.
