How much Dexron II ATF does a 231 t-case take? I can't find the specs anywhere and I don't want to drain the t-case only to find out I don't have enough fluid to put back into it.

I checked my service manual ('97 TJ)
For the t-case depends on whether you have auto or manual:
auto trans - use 1.0L (2.2 pints) in the Tcase
manual trans - use 1.5L (3.25 pints) in the Tcase
might be a little different for your YJ, but I hope this gets you in the ballpark.

Anyone know if there is a difference between Dexron II and Dexron III?

Yeah, I got to thinking about it. When I tore my tcase apart last summer, I think it took in the neighborhood of 2 qts (about 4 pints, or 1.8L). The numbers the manual has may be for the situation where you are simply changing the fluid, not from bone dry.

I dont know if you can get Dexron II. I think the only diff is the detergent that they have.

YA dexron II is like a YJ They just made something better\
Dextron III is like TJ it is what every one has and wants better
So what im saying they just added some new stuff to the II to make it better and called it III

it takes as much as it needs to spill out of the filler.
ATF is chepa. just buy case and it will come in handy.
