how to cut a tank without dying?

ya see that jogged piece on my gas tank where the pickup is? that has to be gone. So how do I cut it off without blowing myself up?

Fill it with water first, then use a cutoff wheel on a grinder for the majority. Obviously at some point the water will leak out, but it will have displaced the gas fumes.

Or a sawzall. X2 on the water, you can also use an inert gas but water is easier.

Is that an old "Trailblazer" tank? It looks a lot like the one I yanked out of my '78 Cherokee... as a dealer-installed option.
